Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Are you too waiting for severance?

I was surprised at how many of my colleagues are still here just because they are waiting for a new round of layoffs to finally leave this place. Isn't that too risky? I will gladly accept another offer and I will not be very picky because I already have a previous experience of what it is like to look for a job after you lose your job.

Can’t you see why Shell does these reorgs every 2-3 years while still hiring externally? Cheaper and newer newer hires. Us long times making $200k+ is what’s costing the company the most. They can hire a grad student @1/2 the price. In the long term they get more value for less money. I’ve been through at least 8 of these since the late 80’s and it’s always the same. Package out the old wood that are planning to hang out and do nothing for the next 4-5 years and hire new blood for a lot cheaper. Its a win for Shell in the long run. On top of that benefits have been changed to the benefit of Shell. No pension, no retirement healthcare. Sweet deal for Shell. History does repeat itself.

Do not think there is a large scale re-org coming anytime soon. Many departments are actually hiring Externally, namely P&T d/s, projects etc that i know of. for those wanting a severance, we missed 2 opportunities in last 2 yrs.. now wait another 3 or so years...

“The only people that really benefit from packages are those that were close to retirement anyway”

Agree, but that used to be workers approaching age 60. Now it seems like that age will be 55 and younger. Not looking to get a new job in the industry, just float off and do “anything but Shell.” If you widening that window to exit, a lot more people will be “waiting for a package.”

The only people that really benefit from packages are those that were close to retirement anyway and they are either getting unexpected money. And for those that had planned to retire in 2 years, they can have two years of their life back and only lose 6 months of salary.
