I’m very focused on getting promoted. I'm doing the best I can. On the other hand, there are many who tell me that maybe it's best to give up on that idea because even if I manage to get promoted, I will just get more work and nothing more. I find it hard to believe this, but if that's the case, I am quite disappointed.

In the short term, my promotion to VP was worth it. I earned it and was proud of it. After a re-org and a new SVP, the title left me with limited options and lots of hollow corporate expectations. It also meant many years of 0% raises. I wish I remained a hard-working, individual contributing AVP.
Yes, after 2002, OPT is extended to 3 years.
So every foreign students got 9 years to work in US. (3 Years of OPT + 6 Years H1B.)
If there are 1 billion working age people in Asia, each with 9 years.
I guess that is our promotion
Yearly raises and bonuses used to be good for all workers until 2002 .
When the madness of cost cutting started, layoffs, going 2 to 3 years with no raises or bonuses.
And sadly as time went on things only got worse.
With my experience in STT for over 10 years, the answer is no. I got promoted to VP some yeas back, but my pay and bonus has basically not changed since then. By the way, my pay is over 10% below the average for the title showed on glassdoor for STT. Also, I have to take a lot more responsibilities since the promotion.

Working hard and receiving a promotion will always be a good idea no matter where you are. It will come with more responsibility, pay, networking and better opportunities elsewhere..
With that said I wish people would accept we are in a different world today. Working for one company for life is not in people's best interests anymore. It stifles learning, advancement, opportunities-and as a result earnings. I see many people working here who stay in the same role for 15-20 years. If you really look at it-and them-that role is all they know, their opportunities elsewhere are very limited especially in such a technology dominant-fast paced world. In order to keep learning, growing: work your hardest, give your best, commit to learning, growth and challenge everywhere you are, but realize that maybe movement will ultimately help you the most over your career.
Go for it. You are ambitious. You will eventually get disillusioned on your own, hopefully by then you will find a new job only for the cycle to begin again. I am at the tail end of my career so I have given up because the more you do , the work you will be given but I am found you are not compensated accordingly. I wish you luck though.

Because if you do not - some H1-B worker will aim to take it, because It is faster to apply green card with a manager title.
Welcome to reality at most companies these days. Best way to get promoted is to find a higher paying job somewhere else
