Macy's is unrecognizable compared to the company it was almost 10 years ago when I started working here. Here I found quite a decent job that allowed me to pay my bills. It is now increasingly clear that those at the top want this to be a company for students or for those who already have a job, so they can add something to their budget. I wouldn’t even say it’s a place for those who don’t have another option, because there are certainly other options. I don't know what a strategy like this can bring in the long run, but I don't know anyone who thinks it's a good strategy.

Macy's never paid enough to cover my bills. Most associates had side hustles. Some drove Uber, others sold insurance to relatives, some worked at other retailers, some worked 3 jobs. Imagine that when you have a "variable" schedule. You really have to be good and convincing people to trade shifts.
I’ve worked at Macy’s longer than 10 years and it is ALWAYS that way. When it comes to the schedule, the holiday help, part timers, flex, etc. always seem to be treated better than the regular full timers. Some employees in these categories are asked - “when can you work? and then their schedule gets changed or put in by hand to be what they want it to be.
This is very true. They don’t care about the employees that have been there a long time or working there full time but bend over backwards to accommodate part timers schedules who are students or part timers with other jobs. But we the full timers are the ones who are covering them when they constantly come late or always calling out. We are coming in early or staying later since these people call out or can’t work these days or hours but they never care about accommodating our schedules. It’s ridiculous. How can a company not care about the employees that are actually helping to run the stores? Those people that are part time mostly are cashiers and don’t bother doing anything else besides ringing. They don’t care to run rods, recover the floor, clean the fitting rooms or anything that requires you to work hard. If we weren’t there to cover them, what would happen the stores? Unless Macy’s has a plan for self checkouts and/or having managers ring up customers, I don’t understand it at all.

Yeah it was terrible this Christmas. I work in the office and have to train these children. Every single day is a song and a dance about how they can't work this or that. In the past I used to tell them that Macy's doesn't work around them, and I would never change a schedule to accommodate them (not fair to regular associates who must live and die by MSP), and now our hands are forced. They are not good workers and have zero loyalty (I don't mean the level of loyalty demanded by Macy's, I mean just the basic care you have for your fellow team members).
