What I learned about performance ratings

Years ago I used to go the extra mile, put in the extra hours, and even earned an exceptional performance rating. My reward? a 1% merit.
Then I still kept my nose to the grindstone, put in the extra effort, made significant changes to how my department does business. My reward was an average successful performance rating. So why bother? Really? If you don't get recognized for your contribution, and even in the odd year you do, but still don't get rewarded in any significant way, why make the effort.
Now I skate along, love WFH, and I'm happy with my successful performance rating.
Good job ENB, you took a high performer and made him average.....

Did you know there’s an exception from the curve for the IPLE group? Those magnificent people are all exceptional! What an honor to be in the same BU as them.

"Ennridge and its shareholders profit ENORMOUSLY off our backs. Never feel bad about working just hard enough to not get fired."

Aren't virtually all Enbridge employees shareholders?

Somebody that I really admire within the company once told me that the difference between successful and high performer is about $500 on your STIP, assuming you are below a 600 pay grade. And what it takes to distinguish yourself from successful to high is a lot of extra hours worked that turns that effort into a poor return on your investment.

Yeah, I agree. You typically get next to nothing for all the extra hours and weekends. There is very little difference at year end. If you love your work and your leader inspires you then the compensation matters less. Occasionally the stars will align.
