Today in the dept I work in we had one opener who worked 9:30 - 6:15 and one closer who worked 6:00 - 9:15. It was a big deal to get another person to cover the opener’s lunch break because we don’t have enough workers. Tomorrow we have an opener working 9:30 - 4:45 and a closer working 3:30 to 10:15. We only have 3 people to rotate shifts that often include unnecessary extended hours. Our mall closed at 7:00 today and tomorrow the mall closes at 8:00.

Our store is so under staffed here in the twin cities that we keep half our registers closed with signs saying that it's due to the Coronaus. Lines are long and nobody wants to work and our sick calls are really high. Next week will be ki---r with the extended hours, I doubt Jeff comes out to stores in our area.
Starting Friday, December 17 through Thursday, December 23 we are open everyday from 8 am until 11 pm. Really? A Sunday from 8 am until 11 pm. The mall will open at 11 am and close at 8 pm for the weekdays and Saturday and will open at noon and close at 6 pm on Sunday. We always have 0 to a few customers that come in after the mall closes.
Does Jeff EVER visit a real Macy's? the ones in the malls that close at 7 or 8?? I'm not sure any corporate person gets it at all. Macy's on line is open 24 - 7; save money by closing at 7 during the week and 6 on Sundays. I swear they have no clue!!!! We are open extended hours AFTER the mall closes and NO customers. Get a grip corporate!
Very few customers shop in the store before 11am and after 8 pm anytime of the year.
Work in the NW in downtown SF and our old store manager asked the corporate lady from Chicago to allow our store to close earlier since we are a city location and there is no traffic in our store after dark, just scary street people and she wouldn't approve the change. Instead we leave late at night and have to risk walking and not have any transportation. Talk about morale.
Is this because there is no one to schedule due to lack of employees? Or because Macys won't schedule enough employees?
Sometimes I am closing at 10 or 11 and I have to be back in at 7:30 or 8:00. The stores says this type of scheduling is allowed because of how many hours there are in between shifts. What about our winding down, sleeping, getting ready, driving, or commuting time. The stores also suggest using your My Schedule tools to shift swap with someone else. All of the swap options are not available at this time and other associates don’t want to close more or open more than they are already scheduled. Flex and holiday help are asked when can they work and they get put on the schedule. Most flex and holiday help don’t close even if it’s an 8 or 9 close.
I agree with you all. I don’t understand the late holiday hours at all. This is after the pandemic and they’re giving us pre-covid hours. The store I work at is always open later than the mall also. Makes no senses whatsoever. This week, we are closing every day at 10PM and the mall closes at 9PM and barely any customers come after 830! Frankly it’s ridiculous. I even have one closing scheduled for 11PM. So the 2 weeks before Xmas, we are closing every day at 11PM while the mall closes at 9PM and then we open at 7 or 8am. It’s so stupid.
Agreed with current staffing levels why stay open so late except for larger sale days like Black Friday and the Saturday before XMAS. Plus the opening time better aligned with the mall would definitely help with the overlapping of breaks. It’s funny that when servicing a tech issue on the floor how the Associate walks away then customers come up and ask for help. Happens way too much and not fun explaining that you’re a vendor and not a Macy’s Associate.
The last poster is right. The overlap of staff during the busiest time of day (11-8) should be more important than extending hours for a few customers. We don’t need to open before 10 and we don’t need to close after 9.
Hours are a little better this year but still ridiculous to be staying open to 9 through the week and 10 or 11 on the weekends. Macy's didn't make good decisions about this before COVID and still isn't doing the right thing now for holiday.
Macy's needs to align their hours with the mall hours. No more "The gate to the mall will be coming down in 5 minutes..." If Macy's is open, say 10-7 or 10-8, then their will be more overlap of staff (ie. better customer service, better score card numbers, lunch and break coverage) and more importantly, better employee morale. Jeff, are you there? Jeff?
