Macy’s to acquire trader joe's stores

Macy’s is in early talks regarding the possibility of acquiring Trader Joe’s food stores for a possible 8.9 billion dollars in a deal they hope to close by the middle of next year. Insiders with knowledge of the talks say Macy’s will continue to operate Trader Joe’s as well as it’s other affiliates including macys stores, Bloomingdales and others, they also hinted that the merger may be used to accelerate the Market by Macys format and therefore converting most Trader Joe’s banners to the market format over the coming years. More to come…

Macys would ruin Trader Joe’s , just as they ruined Macys West.
The in store culture of TJ’s would be shattered.
Let’s hope this is false

How well does Macy's current business model play out in a "Green" new world. Consider that fashion wear manufacturing and production is a significant source of greenhouse gases, does Macy's business model fit? Consider in earlier days your typical male owned 2 pairs of dress shoes and maybe 2 or 3 suits. They were "Made in the USA". If fashion apparel were banned (made with synthetics) and non green imports banned as well, people would have no choice but to buy clothing made of natural(USA cotton?) materials (made in the USA?). Could we see a return to a "less but more quality" mindset? Natural material clothing made in the USA could cost 3 times more, but would be of better quality. There is a lot more selling involved in a more expensive clothing product. A lot of the fashion clothing ends up at Goodwill, which sends what it can't sell to Africa, where what they can't sell ends up in huge waste piles. There are additional costs that might involve automation and higher performance water purification technology. Any thoughts? Would Macy's want to get out the fashion business and just sell food?

re: Bloomingdales LG home electronics and major appliances, here is a link to the story from 2018. Not sure how well the department sold or if there are any plans to expand this test store:

Have not seen or heard anything about this would like to know where you heard it from. Not sure this would work out although I think Macy’s should look into some type of expansion in offering food/convenience items.

Macy’s currently only sells LG major appliances and electronics through one Bloomingdales location in New York City. I have not heard of any expansion on this test store.

I could see Trader Joes buying Macy's if it was only a better run company.

Macy’s needs to make themselves an Essential retail business. This way stores would not be closed if this pandemic gets worse or some new pandemic appears. The 3 months the stores were closed last year were awful and they are lucky they were able to do Fulfillment and Curbside from the stores until they could reopen. Offering a food option like Target and Walmart would help if done correctly.

Macy’s should have done something like this years ago to be more competitive. I don’t agree with spinning off the e-commerce business from the stores though would create a lot more administrative headaches. Offering a market type option would attract customers for sure if done correctly. If the rumor is true Macy’s please don’t mess it up

People like working at Trader Joe's. They feel they are treated well and the enjoy the respectful (for retail) pay. They are friendly and pleasant to customers.

Do you see a difference?

Another thing Macy’s can sc--w up! Take the happy store I go to after leaving work at Macy’s and make it the unhappy! Right now the Trader Joe’s next to my Macy’s has positive vibes, engaged employees, nice assortment, happy customers. Macy’s can sure “fix” that !

Oh yes. Let's take a great business like Trader Joe's w happy, engaged staff and customers and allow Macy's to apply that corporate culture. Everything Macy's has ever absorbed has been destroyed.

I could see Macy's merging with Dollar Tree since the quality is about the same.

Macys shouldn't be allowed to handle food. It can only turn out bad....they can't do anything right. God help us....

I could totally see this working if it was executed properly. Close most of the underperforming legacy mall stores, have a hybrid Macy’s/Trader Joe’s store under the market by Macy’s banner. Would probably bring in a lot of new customers. Unfortunately knowing M the way I do, they will likely just ruin what I love about Trader Joe’s. It will probably be some sort of cheap backstage looking hybrid. Just imagine cashiers in a Trader Joe’s asking, will this be on your Macy’s today. Please don’t ruin my favorite food store!

My manager won’t say one way or the other except to say he wouldn’t be surprised and that the funds raised from the possible spin off of e-commerce could be used towards such an acquisition.
