I’m sick of how they take employees for granted. It's as if they think that the strategy of 'hire, squeeze, get rid of' will forever succeed in filling their pockets. That strategy hasn’t changed in years, but I hope it finally comes to an end.
People are already talking about how some positions that were open used to be filled very quickly, but now that is not happening. Nobody wants to work here. I think that top dogs will have to come up with another strategy, otherwise they will soon have to beg someone to come and work at UP. Agree?

Eventually, they WILL change their attitude, when BlackRock orders them to. Just like they were ordered to require vaccination, etc. But that's years away. It won't happen until the company is seriously hurting.
Sorry, but UP recruiters are having no problem filling vacancies. Regardless of the Glassdoor reviews and the layoffs, there are still people lining up to work here, for whatever reason they might have. It may be a terrible place to work, but the comments about recruiters having a hard time filling jobs is just false information.
The # of employees at UP has decreased by almost 30% in the past 6 years and it is not entirely because of layoffs. Make no mistake about it the hardest job on the railroad is the UP recruiter.
They say it’s because young people don’t want to work weekends and nights, the real truth is wages haven’t kept up enough to work nights and weekends.
Nope. You and over 30,000 others are still working at UP. The company is hiring in many locations and has more applicants than openings. The truth is that although railroad jobs don’t pay as well as in the past relative to other industries, they still pay more than many other labor jobs, and the employees aren’t stuck inside a factory all day. I don’t like UP, but they don’t have a problem filling slots when they need to.
Gotta get that pay back where it used to be, when I started over 20 years ago our wages were way over a living wage. Now not so much. People will put up with the abuse when they are being paid great wages, now everyone else is catching up to our pay level in te&y and it’s just not that desirable when you look at the grueling schedule, attendance policy, time in a motel not getting paid, claims denied, etc... I sure hope we get a decent contract or this place will be just an average job before too long, with inflation.
Agree. Although if the unions would just do as their supposed to and GAIN some ground back (ground they never shouldve lost) and draw up a good contract. An agreement that actually provides members with a real raise. (not some minuscule 1.5% in this time period then 1% for the next year, etc) Then maybe people would actually seek employment at UP again.
Yeah, but there’s still a lot of rat racers at UP that will apply for any job that becomes available.
Disagree. I love the free hot dogs
