Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Lack of leadership

Why do managers continue to put unqualified people into roles as “development opportunities”? I thought the objective is to accelerate and achieve results. Is this favoritism at work? Or is this a training ground? Or a power grab to create an inner circle of allies and yes men?

Sometimes sponsored individuals get moved into a new role solely because their previous project was going into the ditch and the sponsored person needs to be moved before blame can stick.

Sometimes unqualified persons get a position then new Advisor positions are created to cover the ignorance of the sponsored person.

There are many variables that get between a qualified person and the position that fits, but sometimes things work out and people earn a good position and succeed.

Ring leaders put their minions in those roles to maintain control. The decisions made are not about business performance

I’ve never seen an employee get put in a role they were fully qualified for. Everyone’s required at least some level of training and learning in order to contribute. I don’t see that as a problem, if we only moved into roles where we were 100% competent in that area already, we would almost never be able to change roles

All of those are possible, and in my experience previously observed reasons for what you describe, opie.
