Previous poster has it right about most companies being global now.
From spouse and my previous work experience

  • The SAS institute - best place ever for software developers, only reason left was spouse wanted to relocate. Truly treated employees and customers well.
  • W. L. Gore and Associates - spouse really enjoyed the culture and ability to get things done. He keeps in touch with prior coworkers and there has been some degradation of the culture over time.
  • Berkshire Hathaway is well run and treats people well.

There are many small-mid sized companies to admire, but large corporations, not so much.

As the people who grew up in the 40s and 50s and early 60s retired, companies started to lose focus on doing right by others. The me culture and chasing $ at all costs took over. I can’t say that it has brought us to a good place. But perhaps things will right themselves.

Well I will start with UPS. I say that was because two(maybe 3) years ago they announced they were going to freeze the pension. But the kicker was this was not going to happen until five years.
As for the sourcing of jobs outside the USA. People don't forget! You look outside the Midwest you see a very different choices in cars vs SE Michigan. Like the previous poster stated RESPECT is earned. That is a two way street. I do not like the way the current management informs employees about game changing life events. Like HC when you retire. I know those people who took the VSSP this fall were informed after their submission was accepted that Ford no longer handles HC for retirees. A few would never submitted their paperwork had they known. Th e feelin gin the Air is more cuts coming. I heard that NA is top heavy with headcount but yet they are staffing Mexico for the same type of positions. On top of that we are suppose to school these People on how to do you job. Just come out tell the troops what is happening and when get it over with. I would have respect then.

The fact that you ask about "American" companies speaks volumes on how little the average person knows anymore. Since this area of the website is about Ford, I have to assume the OP thinks Ford is an American company. To some degree it becomes semantics and differences of opinion, but Ford is NOT an American company. They have a headquarters in the USA, but that is it. The executives (current and past) "always" describe the company has a "Global" corporation. And that is what it is -- Ford is a "Global" corporation only. Ford has not been an American company since the 1950s/1960s, possibly 1970's. From the 1970's to at least CY 2000, they built design and manufacturing centers around the world. They outsourced to foreign countries all types of components and the "American" jobs that used to build them. During that transition period, they still called themselves American companies, but not as much (because the executives knew even back before CY2000 they were no longer American companies). After 2000, Ford executives openly call Ford a Global corporation. They don't even have to lie about it anymore. And quite frankly, none of the current Ford employees care one bit as long as they stay employed and keep getting a paycheck. And to show how d-u-m-b Ford employees are, the first person to reply called out Apple as an American company! And he/she proudly stated Apple because everyone has been taught to believe that outsourcing your manufacturing to countries outside the USA is "American". And don't try to justify your "American" company position on the fact they pay taxes in the USA or donate to charities in the US because they also pay their taxes and donate to various charities in all the other countries they are located in also.

Unfortunately I no longer have respect for American corporations. You can still find smaller family owned businesses that have integrity but all of the larger companies that I have done business with in recent years are only about profit. You’re out on a limb if there is an issue with the product as customer service is useless. And problems are frequent as quality is gone, regardless of price.

I do like, and almost respect, Chewy (online pet food). Their prices are good and shipments arrive within a couple of days. In a recent purchase I received the wrong 50 lb bag of dog food. I called and talked to customer service after being on hold for about 60 seconds. They overnight shipped the proper dog food along with a gift of treats for my pup and told me to donate the original shipment to my local animal shelter.

Apple?? They are one of the best at money grabbing at any cost company. Honest with customers is a farce. Battery-gate, flex-gate, bend-gate, you're holding it wrong? A very greedy, but successful company. Leave your ethics at the door for employment.

I don't respect any company. If they provide a good service or product I buy it. It's just a transaction, no emotional ties. I have respect for family, friends and people whom I know deserve it. Respect is earned not a byproduct of a financial transaction. Next thing you will just 'LOVE' their product.

Apple. They are at least honest with their customers. I don’t trust Ford at all.
