Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Master Plan

The future plan is to migrate all of the Baseband Units to the cloud. Once this is complete Cell site maintenance is going to be contracted out. That is why Verizon is still hiring System Performance Engineers, laying off Field Technicians and not replacing vehicles.

I highly doubt they can replace, if they do the contractor route they will suck. I don't think you guys realize what we do. We basically fix loose ends engineering is leaving and quite a bit more. The least they can do while sitting on their fat azz at home is make sure databases are accurate. Weekly I am fixing mishaps in routers, enb configs, etc. To me it is easier to replace a paper pusher than one actually doing the real work.

This isn't going to happen for a long time though.. I work in VZW Network and we're still building out new sites with basebands. Plus they've been saying they were going to migrate all the switches to the cloud for several years now and that still hasn't happened..

you'll still need local for a while. think about what actual maintenance happens today compared to 5 years ago

That would fit with reducing employees from 130000 to 100000. That has been widely discussed in meetings.
