Can somebody please let me know what the starting pay is for a fragrance sales associate.
A friend swears it’s $20 an hour and I’m sure there’s no way a retail position would start at that.

Starting hourly rate is totally different than what they’re averaging with their sales commission.
According to Glassdoor, a Macy's Cosmetics Sales Associate averages $14 per hr. The bottom 25% make less than $12 per hr, and the top 25% make $16 to $26. So you have to be within the top 25% to get $16 to $26. I would guess from my experience that there are a few super sales people that make more. I would guess that you have to be in the top 10% to make $20+.
Most fragrance colleagues have a base of 14-17 an hour then add on 3% commission
I have a Fragrance colleague who makes $16.40 base an hour then with her commission she is making $32.45 PER hour. Tenured, great clientele and sales person, It can easily be done in fragrance.
Also in Beauty most of my staff averages $16 an hour base PLUS commission and are averaging $25-$27 an hour.
If you know your stuff, have great customer service, can sell and do add on's PLUS have a good clientele book you can make A LOT of money in cosmetics.

If she's good with regular clienteling, calls or emails friends and clients of special events, she can even make more. She told you what she makes including commission.
Is everyone at your store a counter manager or have 20 years experience?
At my store everyone Makes above 20.00 dollars an hr in fragrance.

Like already posted, it depends on the location and experience. It's $12 at my store, plus 3% commission. $20 might be the unionized Herald Square store in NY.
