Fusion Transmission Class Action

From Ford Authority: Another case of engineered for coat savings bites us again. Quality counts with customers.

A new Ford Fusion transmission class-action lawsuit – Gant, et al., v. Ford Motor Company – has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan pertaining to a number of problems allegedly associated with 2010-2017 models, according to Car Complaints. The lawsuit covers a whole host of allegedly defective components, all pertaining to the 6F35 automatic transmission.

That gearbox was used in many 2010-2012 Fusion models, as well as all 2013+ non-hybrid models save for those equipped with a manual transmission. According to the Ford Fusion transmission lawsuit, the 6F35 gearbox can experience failure of the powertrain control module, transmission control module, torque converter welds fluid seal integrity, and driveshaft. Additionally, the lawsuit cites throttle body deficiencies as a problem as well.

These deficiencies allegedly lead to a number of issues, including slipping gears, delayed acceleration, violent jerking, bucking, or kicking when accelerating, shaking, loss of power, delayed downshifts, clunking, hard acceleration, and difficulty stopping the vehicle. These issues do not pertain to Fusions equipped with a manual transmission or Aisin six-speed automatic units, however.

The plaintiffs in the suit claim that Ford has been aware of these problems since 2009, yet has refused to issue a recall to address them. Some have experienced complete transmission failure, while others have brought their vehicles to Ford dealers for repairs, only to be granted “temporary stop-gap measures destined to fail in the future,” according to the lawsuit.

Ford hasn’t yet commented on the lawsuit, which spans 841 total pages, and claims that the automaker “failed to tell customers about the alleged defects” concerning its recently discontinued sedan.

“Help me understand” must be from purchasing. Always the suppliers fault. Ignores the fact that layers of management approves the decision. Also overlooks the fact that GM bailed and Ford rides the decision out to failure. Sad testimony to our leadership capabilities.

I swore I'd never buy another american car after my '95 saturn. After working for ford, I bought a 2016 focus. DPS6 transmission was total garbage. Rebuild at 90k and again at 180k miles. Of course, the 2nd time around I dumped the car and bought a honda civic. Whew, sanity prevails again.

If Ford launches a bad trans designed by Getrag or a bad trans designed with GM and doesn't sort it out PDQ if there are problems ..... it's Ford's fault.

Good leadership is accountable, reality based, and non-political.... and hard to find these days.

Help me understand this problem. The 6F35 was designed jointly by Ford and GM. This can't be ALL Ford's fault unless the problem lies in the building of it. Remember, the disastrous DPS6 transmission was designed by Getrag, not Ford.

You have to have the right level of competency to lead. When the transmission, powertrain systems, and powertrain quality directors are hired from within many started to feel worried. When the transmission director starts talking about how transmission should be excused because it is very complicated we shook our heads.
At that point more of us felt transmission would be a major contributor to the downfall of the company.

I don't believe its cost cutting or TVM at all. Its about brutally incompetent leadership that knows how to lead to get a quality design or system, prove it out, and then manufacture it.
There are unqualified promotions everywhere in the company so they will continue to have these exact issues over and over.

"temporary stop gap measures destined to fail in the future" would describe the majority of management decisions made at the Fords
