I received a postcard in the mail that UP is offering a $10,000 transfer incentive for all furloughed mechanical and engineering employees who transfer to either train crew, mechanical, or engineering positions. Makes me wonder how long they would keep a person before they lay them off again. I would be hesitant to relocate my family to a new area for this company considering their track record.

Get a CDL and be done with it.
$30 a hour and blood money aren't worth it.
I wouldn't trust any incentive the UP offered! It looks nice, but there's always strings attached to each dollar they give in that inventive. Choose wisely
They dont pay the full 10 thousand dollars. I initially got hired out of san Antonio with this bonus in 2018 and never got the full bonus because I got furloughed a year later .union pacific sucks ba--s.
If you like to work like a dog and your into being treated like a second class human by all means take the job. With all the guys quitting you’ll probably be safe not to get furloughed. Taking a job in transportation means working nights, weekends, and holidays until you retire. Then there is the constant battle of being paid properly because of dishonest time keeping methods.
Remember when you were told to give a two weeks notice at a job because it was the nice thing to do and you didn't want to burn any bridges? Union Pacific didn't listen to that age old advice and instead laid people off while they were on their weekend, or just walked them off the property.
Fast forward a couple years and now Union Pacific is hurting for employees. The ones they have left working are either getting close to retirement, getting hurt due to being overworked, are getting burned out, or just don't care. The word got out about how Union Pacific treats their employees and now they are having a difficult time recruiting people off the street. Upper management figures throwing money at a problem will resolve itself but they are too self absorbed to realize that they burned their own bridges.
It would be interesting to know how many people take Union Pacific up on this offer. Many of them have been laid off for a couple years now and have adjusted to their new lives. I highly doubt this offer from UP is going to attract many takers. And all Union Pacific had to do was furlough people nicely, but no, Union Pacific, in all their wisdom, figured that it was much better to let people go all of a sudden, with no prior knowledge or warning. I could be wrong, but I think Union Pacific has burned all their bridges and this is a last ditch effort in trying to retain some of those skilled workers they threw away just a couple years ago.
I got the same postcard except mine said smell the perfume and it was a trick because Lance fa---d on mine
