People here don’t give 100 percent of themselves and for a good reason too! UP doesn’t know how to get the best out of employees, but it knows how to make them bitter, dissatisfied and unproductive.
I had a lot of great colleagues who were very skilled and could add a lot of value to this company. In the end, these people became less and less interested in their work until they finally left on their own.

Sounds like most of y'all learned how to work but not how to make money...
There’s times when I give that extra effort the managers will give me a freeze and an extra bottle of water. Hang in there cupcake.
The minimum possible. Fu-k these bastards
Yep, if you give 100% UP will just raise the bar and expect 150%. You’re better off not giving 100%.
50%.. If I’m being watched 25%
I work as hard as my managers do so to say the least I give 25% just like they do and I complain just like the managers do about their job
I use to put alot of effort and was proud to work for UP twenty two years ago. As the years went on ,it had changed alot. Not all good as a employee. But good for the shareholders. And the last few years the employee moral is like at a all time lowest i have ever seen. I dont definitely blame the amount of quality experience people leaving UP. We are just a number. And now there are gettin contractors in here more and more. And some of these contractors look like they definitely would not pass a dr-g test. So working with contractors that look like crackheads the moral is of employees has gone done a few steps.
Fill out the surveys folks be honest let’s see if they get someone’s attention.
This is a good question. I work in signal, I make every effort in getting my inspections done on time, I proactively adjust, lubricate, and replace things before they fail. The equipment I am responsible for rarely (compared to my peers) fails and/or causes any train delays. I work overtime on trouble calls (on other peoples districts) and supporting track. But I am blamed like I committed mu---r if something is vandalized or was originally assembled / built poorly by people prior to me. I struggle to remain positive and keep putting forth effort when I blamed for others shody work. Its not like I have alot of time to RE-DO things that were done half a$$ and the dispatcher doesnt care if the wire isnt clipped to the rail properly. The dispatcher just wants to run trains.
I hate what UP has become and how the company operates. With that said, I give 100 percent at work. I was taught that if someone is paying you, that you give honest effort. The amount you are being paid should not determine your effort. Regardless if you are paid 5.00 per hour or 50.00 per hour you should give your best effort. You agreed to your wages when you hired on and can leave if you find a better paying job. I have to look myself in the mirror and the way UP operates doesn’t reflect my character.
The harder you work the more jobs UP wants to cut.
@lvq you’re exactly right! We all know what the Union Pacific represents, and that would be the shareholders! Regardless of that sad statement you still need to show up and perform your job to the best of your abilities or you will injure yourself or others! Every morning I go home knowing I done my job but in the back of my mind I know it doesn’t matter, I’m only making my manager look good and I could be next on the chopping block!
We are all viewed as a cost, not an asset. And that applies from the CEO all the way down to janitorial staff. For you id--ts that run your as--s off for this place because you think it matters, the people that make decisions at this company have no idea who you are. If they can eliminate your position, they will. Union Pacific is one big heartless money making machine, and they have a LEGAL obligation to maximize earnings for shareholders. They are another shining beacon of Capitalism. Ain’t it great!!
The percentage of work you put in says more about you than it does about the company. If you don't like it, by all means you should look for something better. Personally, I wouldn't recommend UP as an employer for anyone. The only thing that keeps me here is that I have good managers at the local level and I enjoy my work. But if you make the choice to stay, you should be working otherwise you're part of the cultural problem we have at this railroad. Just because you don't like the owner, GM, or the coaching staff doesn't mean you shouldn't show up ready to play. If it isn't worth it to you, find alternative employment that will make you happy.
I'd say the general consensus of expended effort among the workforce is 50 to 60% and that's being incredibly generous
I give 100%. I earn my money so pi-s off Earn your keep and be a man.
