Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Ready for something different

After Staples and my experience here, I wanted to change not only the company but the industry as well. I think it was worth investing in expanding skills and getting away from here as far as possible.
I just wonder how many people here started hating their job and decided to start doing something completely different in a completely different industry?

I work on the outside, if you are working 10-12 hour days then you aren’t doing something right unless that’s based on a 3 day work week. I think dost protest too much. We all know what a typical workweek looks like for an outside sales person.

Nope still seeing customers on the outside F2F weekly, while still dialing Dailey to get all that talk time. We tend to work 10-12hr days on the outside, which is why we are still doing well.

Now if things close down again, yes that will change to being an outside/inside worker. Most customers are still willing to see us in person.

Difference is on the inside you are supposed to spend your day reaching out to customers over the phone. Which means a good part of your day should be talking to customers. 40 percent of your day working with customers in this capacity seems reasonable and not micro management. Being on the outside you are supposed to be meeting with customers face to face. Sounds like you are doing an inside job and getting paid like an outside sales person. Ride the wave until that gets figured out but it won’t as most outside reps do their calls over phone and make few appts. I would do an outside sales role too and sit in my house and do inside sales work. Good move for you.

Other sales jobs I went after didn't think sales experience at Staples was very transferable, same with supervisory experience.
I ended up in a warehouse job and a couple of my coworkers who left ended up at Amazon as pickers, we worked in a retail store.
Thanks Staples.

The grass is always greener, all depends on what part of staples you’re in.

Inside is micro managed and all about talk time, that is the stupidest thing ever. 2-3hrs of talk time when forced is not fun and a sh-t environment!

Outside is about driving sales, yeah still have KPIs but focused on quality vs quantity. I’m outside and SO much happier then the inside days. I hit 3-4hrs a day of talk time now, since it’s not forced on me. Weird how that works lol.

I hope no one burns any bridges when they leave here but also do what’s is best for you and your family. Try switching areas 1st but wish you all the best whatever route you choose.
