It is often said that Ford IT is organized like an assembly line.......what does this mean?

IT is organized into silos.
Each silo does one thing and does everything in their power to ensure that only they are allowed to do that one thing. They hide information from other silos to preserve their silo.
Each silo develops a protocol for how other silos are allowed to interface with that silo.

Silos are further subdivided into sub-silos, cross training within a silo is rare.

So just like an assembly line where each person does one thing, each IT silo does one thing. Also just like an assembly line, if you step out of bounds and do another silos job, you will have a new one ripped for you.

At other companies you will see IT seamlessly float between roles and functions, collaborate to accomplish goals, and focus on results not on silo building and preservation. At Ford not so much.

Correct - you have seen the craptasitic new model launches lately, right? So what it means is that Ford IT is just as bad as Ford PD and Manufacturer?? That is just great!

On an unrelated note, be careful what you post on this site, as posts are being deleted not favorable to Ford. There was one briefly yesterday that poked fun at Ford due the new leaders in Afghanistan capturing and using a lot of equipment left behind, including Ford Ranger pickups......but then less than 10 minutes later it was gone!

Lesson learned - Ford is still watching this site!

It's more like a dumpster fire where you have good, dedicated employees trying to put the fire out and prevent it from happening again while half of leadership is standing around watching it and the other half fanning the flames ignoring the issue as the fire starts burning out of control and jumping to the nearby areas/buildings.
