IT is organized into silos.
Each silo does one thing and does everything in their power to ensure that only they are allowed to do that one thing. They hide information from other silos to preserve their silo.
Each silo develops a protocol for how other silos are allowed to interface with that silo.
Silos are further subdivided into sub-silos, cross training within a silo is rare.
So just like an assembly line where each person does one thing, each IT silo does one thing. Also just like an assembly line, if you step out of bounds and do another silos job, you will have a new one ripped for you.
At other companies you will see IT seamlessly float between roles and functions, collaborate to accomplish goals, and focus on results not on silo building and preservation. At Ford not so much.
