I'm new to working a union plant and have never been through a strike before. We are having to go through contingency training. Are we required to work during a strike as staff?
Any advice would be insightful.

Better prepare for a strike if you're on the refinery side. The USW don't play
If in the US, you are likely an at-will employee, so yes, you will have work if there's a strike. You can always quit if you don't want to do that. Frankly, my experience with Shell is that they have NO loyalty to you, so feel free to leave them in the lurch if you don't want to be a replacement operator during a strike.
You'll only get compensated if you are Shell FTE staff. If you are an imbedded contractor or long term contractor you'll get no compensation as the contract lab staff in Scotford found out. You may also be locked in on site, meaning you'll spend around 20 days out of 30 on site, depending on the length of the strike or lockout. When not working you will be in trailers that they bring on-site. This is just to reduce the amount of times you have to cross the picket line. FUN TIMES.
Yeah u r required to work if union goes on strike. You’ll get compensated for all the hours you work. It’s nothing new. You’ll have to work shifts but you’ll make a lot of money.
Yes unless you are part of the union. It might get awkward though
