Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

How many people will lose their jobs?

Are there any assumptions as to how many people will get laid off as a result of consolidation? For me, move to Midland is not an acceptable option.

If you are in Finance/Accounting the 20% that do survive will go to Bartlesville and work. 20% is probably high.

Weather is good. No humidity and no hurricanes!. Restaurants are decent, not as good as houston but you can find really good ones if you take your time. Traffic? 15 min away of everything. Girls? You might be right LOL. You can always take a flight to houston/dallas/vegas/denver on weekends and have fun. If you like hiking, you are three/four hours away from great spots like big bend, palo duro, texas hill country, new mexico, guadalupe mountains, etc. I think it depends on what lens you use

Re: “ What’s wrong with Midland? It’s not like you have to move to nigeria or some other hellhole”

Rents are high, if you’re buying a house you’re gambling equity with local real estate prices, no sports, no good restaurants other than Mexican food and barbecue, school districts sucks, weather sucks, traffic sucks just as bad in a different way. If you’re single, pool of mates suck, ladies at the gentleman’s clubs suck, social life sucks as you move away to friends and family… I don’t know, Houston->Midland seems like a pretty bad deal to me.

I hope I am on the chopping block! This would be perfect timing for me. But it doesn’t seem like there will be any general layoffs - voluntary or not. So y’all can stop worrying and start house hunting in Midland. And if you don’t want to move to Midland, I wish I could trade places with you and take the axe for you while you take over my job.

if they really need those people in midland they will have to work out some compromise. a lot of folks (especially the good ones) simply won’t go. i promise you. you want the good ones. i would give people the option of working from houston for up to 2 years for starters. be more flexible in terms of offering some compromise here. start from a position that they are not doing the employees a favor by preserving their jobs but that shell’s excellent employees can really contribute to Conoco. especially after the remote working learnings during the pandemic companies should really re think their inflexible location policy.
