Q: Drastic career change

I have the opportunity to get out of here, the offer is pretty good, but I hesitate because that would mean making a big change in my career and leaving this industry. Some will say that this industry is declining anyways but still, I have been here for a long time and I am used to working in this industry. Do most people make a drastic career change after they leave here?

If you have to go to an anonymous whiner site to ask advice about employment, you don’t deserve any employment.

I jump on here now and then to remind myself of the horrible environment that I left. I left the company in the last 12 months and decided to change industries. It’s not perfect everywhere either but in comparison it pretty close. HR actually looks out for the employees well being, and if a member of management screws up, they don’t have the EVPs protecting them. It has taken me almost a year to get out of the mindset that someone was trying to stab me in the back and take my job. That is just not a thing here because we are not in a constant state of decline. My mental health has dramatically improved, I have work life balance, and my pay is about the same. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. Funny thing when I tell people my work history, they have no idea who Chesapeake even is. That is what has been the most eye opening part for me. We were fed so much lies and BS there and no one outside of the industry even knows who they are and many people in the industry think they disappeared years ago.

Do it. You won’t regret it.

Don't be d-mb! Take the opportunity learn something else that apparently has high value. The oil field is up and down try something new, if you don't like it you can always get an oil field job on the next upswing.

Are you kidding?
What are you waiting for?
You are in a dead-end company that operates in a dead-end branch (shale / unconventional) of an industry that will continue to shrink massively over the next decades.

I have heard of several switching industries lately after leaving CHK. For me, I have been applying for anything that would bring back some joy in my life. This place is straight up depressing to be at. I feel like I may seriously need to go to counseling because of this work environment.

What are you waiting for? Ever notice how our managers talk about people that are no longer here, either they are happy that person gone because they were not a team player or make up negative stuff on the former employee.

You work for Chesapeake. How much more motivation do you need to leave?
