Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

Farmington Hills , MI office to close

Heard the FH office is Closing and a smaller office will open next year. Any layoffs of the FH staff planned? I know they moved some servers to Mason recently. Tech staff affected?

There was a time when they believed Info Trac was going to save the world. All I know is this. Some world-class executive grifters made lots of cash during their tenures and did absolutely nothing.

Working there was one of the most psychologically challenging times for me. On one hand, anyone with a brain could tell the gig was up. But you would constantly see this cabal of execs running to meetings like the world was on fire and they were going to save it.

@6pbm+1cL9JnAB Some of those egos are still there. When I worked there the those executives I'm sure you're referring to thought that they were running Google and not some reference publishing backwater. The delusional thinking was incredible.

And, no, there are no publishing jobs in Michigan. Some of the smart former Gale product managers moved on to software or auto companies. But the ones who only knew publishing and were let go were just lost.

The egos that once inhabited that building were immense.

They are moving to a smaller office with the majority of employees working from home. But pre-covid that office was a ghost town. 20 years ago the Gale office in Farmington Hills was bursting at the seams and didn't have enough space for all the employees located there. Now it's just a shadow of its former self with much of the building space being rented out to other companies. Gale started cutting headcount before the Apax sale and it's just accelerated since then. Library reference publishing has just been gutted over the past 2 decades.

Very sad to hear. I would guess options In publishing are limited in Michigan. I visited that branch several times and it was larger than I would have expected. Are the offering wfh positions as maybe the space was too expensive.Hopefully many can find work in other industries.

Putting managers in Mason has been a trend for a while. Maybe because we can pay lower salaries there vs SF/Boston.
