A few former colleagues have moved to competitors and now I mostly hear from them that it is much better there. I don't believe much in those stories that the grass is so much greener elsewhere, but it's gotten so bad here that I'm starting to believe that it certainly can't be worse working at the competitors.

As a non cis bipoc I have to say I’ve never been happier than at cengage with their diverse and inclusive environment. I feel like I’m sheltered and protected and I find this comforting while at the same time being productive and able to be who I really am. Sure it’s true I haven’t seen a pay raise or bonus in years or the new titles without recognition but what’s most important is that I feel good and loved, money isn’t everything and even if I make many mistakes and ask for a lot of extra assistance from my coworkers I don’t get the impression they’re sick and tired of my behavior. I can’t think of a better place to be myself.
The incel is back. Is that what TheLayoff has become? A place for chip-on-their-shoulder men to hate on women?
I’m sure there are smaller places that may be better. I worked in tech for Cengage for a few years. The people were nice but if you weren’t g-y or a liberal womyn there wasn’t much of a chance for a promotion.
When I found out one of the employees running an activity on Bring Your Child to Work day had been in jail for raping a young girl he was fostering (and was an RSO) I decided it was time to move on.
I changed industries, which is fairly easy to do in tech. I enjoyed my tome at Cengage until the CEO started making political speeches/emails the norm. The ‘don’t worry I won’t be deported’ one took the cake,
It’s true it’s much better at smaller houses. Cengage is the last respite for obese women with dermatological challenges who can’t get any other work anywhere else. I’m in marketing , last time I went to campus I was accompanied by a female ham planet who carried nothing but Fritos and candy in her filthy purse and had body odor. She picked me up at the airport and her car smelled like ranch dressing and onion rings. Never again. Mcgraw women are much better and because they’re thinner and more attractive they close more deals and make more money and get much more respect, trust me. As they say, cengage is the dumping ground for washed up and disgraced pharmaceutical reps. :)
The Big 3 are all more or less the same. That's why so many employees bounce from one to another. The smaller players are supposed to be different. But if you really want to get out of the east coast publishing culture you need to go to another industry entirely. Educational publishing has a massive groupthink mentality...more so than any other industry I have worked in.
