Waiting for severance pay means missing out on better opportunities

It is very obvious what Lenovo is doing. Most of all, they would like people to leave so that they would not have to give them severance and so that the media would not write about layoffs. That’s why whoever I’m talking to has been under a lot of pressure lately, but some of these people aren’t going to leave until they get layoff and severance pay.

I understand somewhat their attitude when it comes to employees who aren’t marketable, but isn’t that a waste of time for those who might find a much better job? I gave notice because it's not worth staying here for another second.

My advice in this market is to spend 100% of your time acting like you are working and spend that time finding your next job. Smart college grads are laughing at Lenovo. So much better in the area. A friend's son almost took an offer from Lenovo. When he asked the hiring manager how often they have layoffs, the manager had the d-mbest look on his face. They said he turned down the offer right then and took one of the other offers. Finding a tech job now is easy. The only downside though is the high salary demands make you a target in the next down economy.

True story

At least the regular Lenovo employees receive a severance pay package. If you're working there as a CTG contractor, you're laidoff, and escorted out the door immediately (and it always happens BEFORE the end of the month, so you won't get paid on that month's unused vacation time and sick time). That's true even if you've been a loyal, hard working contractor there for over 5 years; they will suddenly treat you as if you're a spy for HP or Dell.
