Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Woodfield Mall Sears field trip

Visited the store this past week (Aug 30,2021)

Very few customers in the store
Merchandise spread out to avoid parts of the store looking bare
The sporting goods section had very little merchandise, same with tools dept.
Rugs need to be cleaned- filthy
Seem to be out of stock on popular items/sizes in apparel
Most of the upper level consumed by area rugs

Compared to JC Penney/Kohls, the store looks to be in poor shape. I know that Macy's and Nordstrom's are going to be better.... but JCP and Kohls are realistic competitors. This store used to be one of the flagships of Sears... with this presentation it is going to be hard to compete. I think Simon properties hopes they will soon close so they can put a competitive retailer there. Or, Eddie needs to make some improvements... guessing this is unlikely.

From another post on this site: "Transformco" closing Woodfield Sears Nov 14 2021. Based on the condition of the store, this is hardly a surprise.

Thanks for the info about the rug vendor. It is truly surreal to see Lord & Taylor boarded up and dark, Sears in the shape it is and other empty spaces at Woodfield. The parking lot used to be jammed on the weekends, now it's maybe less than half of what it used to be. Carson's at Streets of Woodfield also dark. I think the high point for Woodfield was the late 80's - early 90's - always jammed-

The "flagship" is going down a lot slower than the Titanic.

They should add a bunch of stalls and make it into a craft mall, flea market and antique mall combo. That would bring in more traffic. Sears already has elements of all three, might as well go all the way.

It is kind of funny in a sad way that Sears is so decrepit they have to rent space to a rug dealer just to fill in the holes. And it's sad for the rug dealer who will end up hauling the stuff away when the store closes. I used to go on field trips to Sears stores and as they faded out they always looked like a very slow going out of business sale. There were few customers and little merchandise, with the bulky stuff spread out to make it look like a functioning retail business. Mattresses were a great choice since they take up so much room. The local Kmart filled up aisles with Rubbermaid totes.

All of the stores in my area have closed, and it would be a 1200 mile field trip to see an open full line Sears store. Why they are keeping the few stores open is a mystery. The remaining fans of Eddie Lampert think it's all about the tax assets of Sears Holdings. He has to keep some stores open to eventually use the tax losses on some other business.

The rugs are being sold by an outside vendor. He told me many were left over from the Lord and Taylor liquidation and now he’s renting the second floor space from Sears. I asked where he’s going to sell his rugs when the store closes and all he said was he’s hoping to have until the end of the year before he has to move. Kind of funny to me for some reason. Good news is you can talk him way down on prices if you find something you like. I’m talking getting a rug for $99 which he listed for $499. (The $99 is more like what you’d pay for them elsewhere anyway) . I know he’s in no way way related to Sears but it was nice seeing someone in a Sears building trying to sell something instead of hiding.

Woodfield is the Sears Flagship Store. Are the area rugs being sold by an outside vender? When you see area rugs being sold by an outside vender in a Sears Store that is a sign of things to come and they aren't good.

Not at all unlike any of the other handful of Sears stores that are remaining.
