What's with all the tension between young and more experienced employees?

When I first came here, I was really disappointed with the way those more experienced employees treated me. I expected them to be role models and good mentors. Now I see it here again:

You young workers think you are more important than you are in reality. I would rather hire some 80 year old with a memory and engrained technical skills and work ethic than you spoiled folks.

Why so many negative stereotypes about younger employees?

Agree..HR definitely babies the millennials. How does someone coming in with no experience get numerous large promotions and double their salary in 7 years. And be a manager over an area of expertise that they know nothing about. Crazy.

Many millennials are hard to work with. They don’t share information. Difficult to mentor, they think they know better, and want to be managers with 2 years of experience. And they don’t take responsibility for their mistakes, they blamed others. On top of that they are babied by HR.

Suggest you humble yourself a bit and act like the low man on the totem pole that you likely are. You know, act like the student, not the teacher.

If you do that, you might find that some of the grizzled old, bitter, boomer veterans are more than willing to help you out and help you along in your career.

When I started in the oil patch, my goal was to one day be able to say "Kid, let me tell you something about . . ." just as it was said to me.

That would mean I had actually accumulated knowledge worth passing on.

The answer is respect and humility. Even when you're in the right.

Let it be known that you want/are willing to be "mentored" and you'll have plenty of backers going out of their way to help you.

Let it be known that you're the smartest guy in the room (even if you are) and you'll have plenty of people wanting - if not hoping, perhaps working - to see you fail.

Take it for what it's worth.

OP, have you missed all the negative comments here about boomers? This tension is everywhere and has been going on since before your great great great grandfather was born.

Stop being a cry baby. Look at yourself and peers, do you respect more senior employees or use them and steal their ideas and slides without credit. That's what most of the sh-t-pots have done and still do.

Hence part of the problem. They hired too many people right from the university to fill employment needs due to “ the great crew change” that never happened. Does anyone see older people 55+ retiring anytime soon without a VSP or other incentive?

That’s a standard human mentality you will face from Amazon to local morgue business including Oxy. In my opinion Oxy median age is much younger than many Oil and gas companies in Houston.

Get over it. It has been that way for everyone from the beginning. Why change for you. It is called pay your dues, and can feel a little like mild hazing. Just toughen up and it will serve you well in the future. I am in my sixties and in my 20's and 30's I had guys that were really tough. It has toned down a lot since then.
