Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Is it just me, or does Shell seem like they are getting out of providing goods and shifting to services?

As we look at our current society and into the future, most of Economy seems to be service driven. With all the sales of assets and purchases of electricity and alternate energy, It sure seems like it's not just a transition from oil and gas. But yet a transition into a service based company. Think about it. Paying Shell for your electricity. Everyone uses electricity. Everyone drives vehicles also, but with the shift in EV, gasoline, diesel- why would you try to split in several markets when you can equally corner the one that is used the most. Electricity. With Big Data like Apple, MICROSOFT, Google, etc. - I see Shell trying to implement something similar in the future. Anybody else have any theories?

Hard for me to imagine that Shell would be successful in a low margin industry especially with past two decades of repeat failures in oil and gas, an industry where they should excel. Poor management and bloated organization.

lol. corner the market on electricity ? by buying startup companies ? too much competition potentially from companies with much smarter folks at the top.

I agree, Shell is looking 20-25 years down the road. It's not luck they've been around for over a hundred years and they'll be around long after we're gone.

I mean, look at who they bought. MP2 is a retail electric provider. They do C&I/asset management. Pulse Power are residential in ERCOT. They just bought someone else who does residential in PJM.

They are preparing for a world where oil/gas isn't as big as it is now.

Of course they are - it’s all about developing revenue streams not tied to commodity pricing. This is how the company will thrive as hydrocarbon demand slowly decreases.
