Now that wal mart is carrying the knock off Ralph Lauren brand Sears used to, (US Polo Association) what's the point of moving into such a place, in NJ especially. They have lost all brand association, and anything that even resembled high quality walked out the door with lands end. It's NJ, I get the sarcasm in the suggestion and I did laugh. I grew up in south jersey so I have a bit of a reference point for both the loyalty jokes and the financial disaster jokes that can be made here (re: Boscovs at the shore mall is not allowed to die), at least Boscovs can sell the buyer a decent suit or something stylish from an actual clothing line. The reality is that Sears is no longer equipped to satisfy even the NJ name loyalty shopper and that's when it's time to give up the ghost.

For the same reason that Lord & Taylor and Gimbels haven't opened stores there yet.

There are some penguins at North Pole, that will happily shop at the new small format Sears fish & tackle stores. Very efficient 1000 sq ft. stores.

Isn't the North Pole losing the Arctic ice? Are there any customers up there?

Well there is a Sears hometown in the huge megalopolis of Williston North Dakota, a Sears mattress ( or something sinilar) store in Alaska, and a Kmart in that sprawling cosmopolitan city of Hamilton Montana. So the company certainly has stores in random places. So why not North Pole, Or North Korea?

As a resident of Lake Wakatipu, I am thoroughly confused on the topic of this thread.

As a resident of Bergen County NJ, it was a little bit of bitter sarcasm on my part.

To clarify: I mean the American Dream Mall is a boondoggle that needed government guarantees to get built and to survive as long as it has. There was no initial demand for a mall that big and in that place and there still isn't. I expect it to fail financially one or more times within the next 10 years.

Putting a Sears store there won't help. Both for all of the reasons you listed and because Sears is already dead.

I live in NJ and don’t understand your statement. Did you mean they have a better chance at long term survival if they open a store in that mall? First off, they would have no merchandise to stock the shelves with. Secondly, they wouldn’t be able to get any vendor to extend them credit to stock those shelves and lastly, the rent at that mall would probably cost more than all their remaining locations combined.

Sears has a better chance of long-term survival.
(If you live in NJ you know this isn't a joke.)

Maybe Sears association with anything called "American Dream" would just be too embarrassing.

Probably there would be too much competition from the thrift store in the area to make it feasible.
