Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

No new layoff rumors?

Is there any new rumor about layoffs but that it wasn’t made up by some entropy lover? So, no one has any info on whether there will be any major cuts soon or not? Judging by the atmosphere only, there is enough tension as if there could be cuts tomorrow...

In your second bullet I think you meant to say: help the person improve their “performance”.

The PIPs are fine if:

  • the original justification is true and honest.
  • a real plan is put together to help the person improve their rating
  • the management can support removing someone from the PIP once they prove themselves.
  • other managers will not look down upon people coming off of the PIP and will actually accept them into a new job. Management gets paid to be somewhat compassionate and be kind to people where warranted. This aspect of human behavior at many companies needs to be rewarded.

The way Oxy tolerates low performers and sweeps them under the rug is amazing but it’s also typical. A focus on actually using the PIP runs the risk of certain low performers continuing to be protected by buddies or for other unacceptable reasons. Then the mid level quiet people who just keep their heads down and get their jobs done get put on the PIPs because managers are less afraid of confrontation with them.

Oxy should start now because it’s the right thing to do. Socialists aren’t running this company (yet).

Exxon has always done that it’s nothing new. Why would Oxy start now?

Oxy doesn’t do forced layoffs like this.

Exxon just announced they will layoff between 5-10% per year for next three years by culling low performers - that’s a lot! Oxy will be pressured to follow suit as they should!!

Oxy doesn't do layoffs. Vicki said it herself. She values her employees above all else so stop making up stuff!

If there were going to be layoffs, they would have happened a year ago. Good times are ahead.

@2yrf+1bgHullf, you are right with one exception. Many don’t just desire an ideal working situation, they have been raised and/or taught that they deserve one.

People just come on hear to vent and hope someone in management or HR reads their comments and make do something. They would be better going to their manager or addressing their issues with HR. Most of these complaints are just whining and venting that they can't have the ideal working situation they desire.

“Oxy employees appear to have low morale”. Wow you can tell someone’s morale just by looking at them? Is it their ears?

Not the point. Why do Oxy employees appear to have low morale with high oil prices. Is there something wrong and they are not growing with Oxy anymore.

Oil prices are at a two year high now. You should be dancing in the hallways of Greenway Plaza now. What is wrong my little darlings. Have you lost confidence in yourselves? Or is it just the uncertainty of coming back to the physical work environment.

Nothing will happen until after Sept 7th in my opinion. Oxy does not even know how many are going to return by then. There is probably many people not wanting to come back whether Sept 7th or earlier. It would be crazy not to see what happens with attrition. I know our department is very busy and activity will just keep picking up with the oil price increasing. It hit 70 plus today.
