Has anyone who is 50+ left the industry and found success elsewhere? I know it’s a hindrance once you hit your mid 40s but finding gainful employment is important and I’m wondering if I should look outside my field. I’m trying to get my foot in the door somewhere even if it’s a position that will take me a step or two beneath where I should be.

If they lay you off because of your age shame on them, count your blessings and work on your resume.
I'm sure you can do better.
People 50+ are finding work all the time. Don't undersell yourself, and don't take a lower job/pay thinking that's needed. Get your resume updated and work your network.
I have a relative who went through a layoff at 60 and found a much better job, with much higher pay and better benefits. That happened about a year ago.
