I’m not kidding, how long can this management by attrition approach, this slog by attrition actually maintain itself? I’m actually surprised this old sow is still plodding along.

Here's whats going to happen. Cuts will continue as there is zero growth possibility. Sales gets the hatchet next. In the next 12-18 months, Apax will sell the business to another PE company who will continue cuts, (see McGraw and Ascend.).
It is what it is. If you like it, stay. Many people work for companies owned by PE and choose to exist in that environment. If you don't like it, leave for another job. They are plentiful. If you think you are smarter than everyone else, go start your own business.
For those of you who complain about sales management, remember that sales managers in publishing have always been imbeciles. I could type a list of 30-40 people off the top of my head who were/are in publishing sales management who are absolutely terrible.
What you are dealing with is no different than what went on 40 years ago, or 30 years ago, or 20 years ago.
