A friend recently received an offer of employment for an LL4 position that he is debating accepting after finding this site. He had no idea this universe existed. With all the layoffs and voluntary separation programs, should he be running for the hills? What does LL4 even mean? Does Ford really layoff its salaries workers all the time like this?

If your friend was offered this position I would have expected the interview process or offer letter to explain what it means to be an LL4. The interview questions alone give a potential employee insight into job responsibilities.
Of course your friend should take the job. LL4’s get good salaries and bonuses. When layoffs or reorganizations happen they get healthy severance packages. If the friend manages to stay with Ford until retirement age they’ll get a new lease vehicle every year for the rest of their life. LL4’s move around so much within the company that job knowledge is a plus but not necessary.
If your 'friend' who is not a Ford employee, received an LL4 offer, however - never 'knew these types of sites existed....they absolutely sound like the perfect management recruit Ford seeks. People so out of touch and self serving that they are clueless others exist and that the world revolves around them. So they are the perfect fit to join the toxic Ford culture and join the Hunger Games that are Ford. Finally yes, there are layoffs every year that stretch on for months that Ford uses to sow chaos, fear, paranoia, and destabilize their workforce. I can promise you HR has already sold them on their timeless lie that THEY are the future and their current workforce doesn't have the SPECIAL talents they have. Yeah, we all got that line. So if your 'friend' is a decent person, they should run for the hills. If they are a slimy narcissistic bully, well - they will accept it and fit right in and enjoy themselves plotting against their peers and abusing others.
Of course he should take the job! He will get a better voluntary separation package when the time comes also. I don’t believe he would consider not taking the job due to this site.
Being that your friend was offered an LL4 they are either a professional bu-t kisser, a pathological liar, or their DNA represents some diversity initiative. Or a combination of the three. That said, just take the job and collect the money. That's what most LL4s do any way. They don't really lead anything and just rely on reporting up the chain of command. They just further craft the message on its way up the pyramid so it does not look as bad as it truly is.
