Thread regarding Sears layoffs

17 Kmarts are remaining

Finally! I spent the last 2 Days searching links and researching this particular case. Finally (since I never declare a store closing or remove it from my super-duper master list/map unless I am 200% sure), I was able to get someone on phone, at the Manhattan store, to confirm they are closing TODAY, with pharmacy closing in about "1 Week", he Said, but he suggested I call the pharmacy Tomorrow to confirm that. I have never seen a pharmacy outlast the main store, but there's a first Time for everything LOL!
The awesome thing about this, is that I get to bop yet another pharmacy off the master command list and map! I only wish he had closed more in this round, so my mission of getting all the Kmarts closed A.S.A.P., would have been closer to being accomplished. Alas, we take what we can get, and I'll enjoy this early Summer gift!
Once again, for the person who will invariably troll about it, I only include full line stores in this list, not departments (such as the Kmart department of Brooklyn Sears).

Odd, that among the 11 mainland Kmarts, zero will be left in Manhattan, yet there will still be one in that sprawling metropolis of Hamilton Montana, LOL! Unreal!
I had thought that (other than Guam), the Manhattan store was sort of the defacto flagship, but no more!!

Come on, Ed, please bop out MT, CA, and MI, at least so I can Streamline my master command map.
We are now at 17 Kmarts total, 11 of which are in the US. I have changed my map to reflect this as well:

CALIFORNIA

  1. GRASS VALLEY -P

FLORIDA

  1. KEY WEST
  2. MIAMI

MICHIGAN

  1. MARSHALL -P

MONTANA

  1. HAMILTON

NEW JERSEY

  1. AVENEL
  2. WESTWOOD

NEW YORK

  1. BRIDGEHAMPTON
  2. BRONX
  3. BRONX -P
  4. WHITE PLAINS

TERRITORIES:

GUAM

  1. TAMUNING, GU -P

PUERTO RICO

  1. HATO REY -P

USVI

ST. CROIX -P
ST. CROIX
ST. THOMAS -P
ST. THOMAS
Statistics: Kmart absent in 44 states. 3 states, CA, MI, MT, have only 1 each. There are 11 Kmarts in US States total. Of those in the US, 3, marked with letter "P", have pharmacies as well as 4 more pharmacies in the territories, also marked with letter "P" (total of 7 pharmacies remaining).
Puerto Rico has 1 Kmart, USVI has 4, Guam has 1, so 6 total stores outside of the US. 17 total Kmarts left as of now that are not closed or closing.

States with more than 1 Kmart:

FL: 2
NJ: 2
NY: 4

Few random silly tidbits. Not a very important detail, but just wanted to mention, that upon calling the pharmacies at NY ((212) 253-9661), and Freedom CA (831 728-9324), I get a recording at both numbers, with the same lady in a southern accent, stating that each location was closed. Try it. The fact that the same person recorded both announcements for 2 stores, 3000 miles apart, leads me to believe it was recorded at a different locations from the stores (especially since the accent is not common in CA or NY).

Other side tidbits, the closure of the Kmart main store and pharmacy in Manhattan, means the last Kmart stores in the famous 212 area code have closed (Bronx uses 718). Also, this frees up 2 separate 212 #'s, which I have read, are at a premium in Manhattan. Useless factoid, I felt like sharing.

Oddly, the now 1-Week since, closed store in Manhattan is still hiring for help to box up merchandise:

@2cdl+1bNHIUkF I'd be happy to buy buildings from him, EXCEPT HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY TO SELL! The last of the "owned" (A.K.A. Seritage) properties closed, as of Dec. 2020, I think (not sure exact Date, but the last Seritage store definitely is closed). Every remaining store is leased. And I can't lease any of those locations unless and until they are vacated. Can you go lease a car that is currently out on lease to someone else, and is being driven on a freeway 3 states away right now?
Further, from everything I've read, every location (other than Guam/USVI), actively LOSES Money just by staying open, all things being equal. It's like the equivalent of leaving your car idling in the driveway but not driving anywhere. You are spending that gas for NO gains of actual mileage/transportation. He is losing Loot just by keeping the un-Profitable locations open. Unless he has a Money-printing machine at home, it makes no fiscal sense to continue a location, that runs at a loss.
Maybe it's a pride/ego thing, who Knows? But he stubbornly refuses to just get it done with and move on, as so many other retailers did when their Time was up (Caldors, Bradlees, Jamesway, Shopko, Pamida, Ames, Corvetz, Toys R Us, Service Merchandise, countless others). They just nicely and cleanly made a clear break, and shut down everything, without leaving random vestiges around, like Hamilton Montana Kmart, for crying out loud. Make a clean break and end the charade. Keep Guam/USVI open or whatever, if he wants, but why continue losing Cash on the others? Keep that extra Loot for yacht gas. Target has thousands of stores, and this clown has, what, maybe 20-some odd locations? (Multiple sports analogies coming): I'd rather lose that football game, 200-0 and get off the field as fast as I can, then stay out there another half Hour, to make it 200-3 while the crowd laughs and boos, Knowing fully well that the end result (that my team will lose) is inevitable and unchangeable. If I was playing tennis against Roger Federer, of course I wouldn't Win a single point. And when I'm invariably down 6-0, 6-0, 5-0, Love-40, and I call a medical Time out at match point, and ask for the trainer because I have a leg cramp, the umpire would laugh at me, ask me to take my loss like a man and get off the court. Honestly, I'd prefer to get off the court A.S.A.P. instead of staying out there getting obliterated in front of everyone. That's where Kmart/Sears is now. Stop worrying about kicking a field goal down 200-0, and get off the field as soon as you can before you make yourself looks sillier than you already have, Eddie. It's over. You cannot Win this game. Stop humiliating yourself, get off the field, and let a more competitive game come on TV that we actually enjoy Watching.

@1vpe In lieu of all that talk, I suggest you buy or lease s few buildings from him to move your desires along. I'll wait.

Anyone want to guess which Kmart(s) will be the next to go? Maybe Marshall and Hamilton will finally close (and all of them by Christmas hopefully), here's hoping!

At the peak of the Martha Stewart era in the late '90s, that Astor Place Kmart was the top-grossing store in the chain (before Guam took over the title).

Certainly a step in the right direction, but still a small list. The last Kmart list was only 2 California Kmarts, and this list is only 1 NY Kmart. Why the teeth pulling to get some decent closing lists around here? We have 17 left? Good. He should close 10 now, then in a few Months, close the remaining 7, and be done with it. Stop dragging your feet and get this done already, instead of these drib-drab teeth-pulling, small lists. Do the same thing on the Sears side too. Finish this up already. (Sports analogy incoming): It's like Kmart is in the 9th inning, down 200-0, and they decide to make 7 pitching changes to delay the inevitable result. Or that football team down 200-0 with 1 Minute left that decides to use all their Timeouts, and keep running the ball out of bounds to stop the Clock. It's over, you lost. Get the game over with so the players can go to the locker room with at least some dignity, and hit the showers, and go home. End it and move on.

K Mart is poised to make a comeback. Look at the all of the customers they can serve with their regional offices of CA, MT, and MI.

Now that we finally solved our liquidity issues we are better positioned for a surprise comeback. Keep your eyes open, we will disrupt retail as you currently know it.

This is the list of stand-alone full-line stores, only. I couldn't care less how much merchandise some department of another store contains. It has no bearing on the list of full-line, Kmarts, which stands at 17.

Astor Place merchandise is being moved to the Bronx stores and the Brooklyn KMart. If Brooklyn’s KMart inside the Sears gets merchandise from the Astor Place store and Brooklyn’s KMart is better stocked than Hamilton, Montana or Marshall, Michigan, then why won’t you include Brooklyn? Do it. Do it to It.

Thank y'all for this insightful information. I didn't Know that. It makes total sense. I couldn't understand why they would need to hire people for a specific shift for a store that is now defunct, but your explanations describe it perfectly. Thanks again!

I just have never seen a store instantly close like that without any liquidation before! But I guess I can understand, with the overhead of operating in Manhattan (probably the most expensive area on Earth), they probably just wanted to empty the place ASAP. I can only imagine how much the Rent is, in Astor place.
I think this about does it for Kmart, at least on the mainland. I thought it would at least be a "thing", in NYC, Guam, and USVI, and it probably will still be in the latter 2, but if they're leaving Manhattan, then they're just about done in the mainland U.S.. I mean you have your scattershots in Montana, Marshall MI, Grass Valley CA, or whatever, but those are just random exceptions. They are not a "thing" in the U.S. any longer. Guam/USVI will persist, probably for a long Time (because of the uniqueness of those markets, not because of anything special about Kmart), but that's about it for Kmart.

Why is Kmart pharmacy still a "thing"? I mean, are the residents of Grass Valley CA, Marshall MI, and Bronx NY, so hard up to find a pharmacy that they resort to going to Kmart, when there are 1000's of Walgreens, CVS, Riteaids, or whatever nearby? I mean, pharmacists typically earn over $100 G's per Year.....why not end that charade (except for the niche markets off-Shore)? They can get away with Paying some stoned slackers to ring a register, $12 per Hour, but not a pharmacist with a Degree. There are, but 3, left in the U.S. mainland. Pull the plug. I can't believe I'm giving Ed Financial advise.

I know that NYC has very specific regulations regarding trucks/deliveries, etc during the day due to traffic. If I remember correctly you can only have large trucks at night in Manhattan. They probably need an overnight crew to load up the truck with fixtures and merchandise at night to comply with this regulation. Just a thought.

@oei+1bNHIUkF Only thing I could think of would be maybe they need to be out of there by the end of the month or a certain date and they want to get everything out of there ASAP. I imagine remaining any inventory might go to the Bronx stores (or the other remaining NY/NJ stores), it will be interesting to see.

Oh, just wanted to add that I contacted several local media outlets in the NYC area, about this wonderful new find, so expect some external links to be generated the next few Days! Got another one! We did it! Feeling happy and celebratory. Hopefully more to come soon, so my mission for there to be zero Kmarts might finally be realized! 😀😉👏🎉🎂

Just wanted to mention that it's odd that they are specifically hiring OVERNIGHT help, though the store is now permanently closed. If the store is closed anyway, why do they need people specifically during OVERNIGHT shift, just to box up merchandise? Must it be done when only owls are awake? I could totally understand hiring for that shift if the store was open during the Day, but it no longer is.
