I know a person who made a big mistake because she was waiting for a package instead of leaving Commsope when she had a pretty good offer. I don’t intend to make that mistake because it’s a lot easier to get a job while you still have a job. I already have a hunch of cuts next quarter and I hope I won’t be here until then.

Good advice. If the stars align and you happen to get a package at the same time you have found a new job, that should be considered a bonus. Much more important to find a good new job and take it when it is available. That said fine tuning your start date at a new company by a few weeks maybe possible. I successfully did it to get a LTIP payout before I left. If push came to shove, I would have left the LTIP payout on the table rather than lose a good job.
