Thread regarding Sears layoffs

At This Point, is there ANYTHING that Can Save Kmart?

Or Sears? Or Both?

I view Kmart as the better of the two so if I was holding both over a cliff like on the Macaulay Culkin movie "The Good Son", it would be Kmart I would save.

Getting off topic there, but is there ANYTHING that can be done to save Kmart? If we all go to the nearest one and buy all their merchandise would it build supplier confidence and see some more stores open? I mean Circuit City, Toys R Us and others had more stores still existing and they liquidated all at once.

There has to be a reason why these few stores still remain open and I would like to believe it is that glimmer of hope to turn this company around. I dont want my grandkids to grow up in a world without Kmart or Sears! Please let there be a hail mary play and it save this company!

I get that Eddie's focus was ultimately the real estate but how much could he have made between the horrendous managing of the company and real estate values for commercial not being in need. Not to mention the costs of all the facilities they have... The taxes, electric, etc.

Obviously, Eddie bought Kmart and a Sears for the Real Estate. Many wonder what took him so long to get after it, thus extending the slow death. What everyone is missing is that HE intentionally hired Leaders for this company with Zero retail experience and Zero people skills. Starting with Mr Lewis (KFC?j to Leena (Ms India). Failure was all by design.

Sears being involved with Kmart is really more what did Sears in, in the first place.

The only thing that would likely save the company at this point is to get completely out of the brick/mortar retail business and get the online business on par with everyone else (prices are stupid at Sears.com).

Then just focus on fixing home services and let that be the business.

visionary like Arthur Martinez

Eddie bought Sears and Kmart for the real estate. That should be common sense by now. His ultimate goal was to slowly liquidate the company, piece by piece, to only benefit himself. As the press has said for years, this is the slowest liquidation in retail history.

How do the stores keep up with rising utility costs? They dont have skylites like Walmart so the lite bill has to be sky high

OMG. The Kmart cheerleader is back again. You need to move on with your life.

Eddie needs to remove himself. He's destroyed these companies. I worked at corporate for almost 25 years. When I think back of how well we were doing 20 years ago, the comparison is startling. Yes, both companies had issues but Special Ed made things worse with stock buy backs, selling off credit and making questionable hires like Alwyn Lewis among others. This is what happens when you put a bean-counter in charge rather than a visionary like Arthur Martinez.

Short answer, no. There is no go forward plan for any of these stores. The remaining store are lined up at the graveyard just waiting for their turn to be burried.

Sell it to someone willing to save it, instead of selling it off piece by piece to close it.

To give an answer to your question, it might be too late at this point to save either brand, but IF you were going to seriously try to salvage the company, the first thing you'd need is to have Warren Buffet/Jeff Bezos level of money. Then pay off all your debts. Then no more store closings, keep all remaining stores open. Then rebuild/repair destroyed relationships with vendors, to start getting product back into remaining stores. Renovate/update all remaining stores and put out a massive press release that Sears/Kmart is back and under new management. Once you've made it this far, open a couple of new stores to show the comeback is on. Make this the "new" Sears/Kmart and you might have a chance. Not saying this would work, but the key is you need many millions of dollars to rescue what's left.

A tactical nuclear strike on all competitor stores and Amazon distribution centers should buy a few more months.

Otherwise no.

Edward Lampert is the key to saving both retail empires. Never lose faith and trust the plan. Edward will make all things possible. 20 years from now when Wal-Marts are liquidating left and right and new Kmarts are opening in old Wal-Mart locations, you can thank Mr. Edward Lampert for having the courage to never give up on these two retail legends.

Thank you Edward
for saving us from Wal-Mart
with your Sears & Kmart empire.

There is no compelling reason for people to shop at KMart or Sears vs the competition anymore. Shoppers can buy many of the same products anywhere else these days.
Craftsman tools are sold at other retailers such as Lowes, etc.

Why Eddie Lampert is dragging out the shutdown of a money losing retail operation defies logic and common sense.

Kmart's biggest competitor is the local Dollar store and neighborhood yard sales. Eliminate those two and Kmart will come back strong.

Sears was the better of the two. Now go to the Kmart thread if you want to ask this.

Seriously, most of our grandchildren have already grown up without a Sears or Kmart. This brand has been closing down across the country for well over a decade now. My grandson goes online and immediately finds the latest things that he wants. He has absolutely no interest in going to some store to rummage through a limited selection of mostly outdated merchandise.

LMAO I know you're just trying to get a rise out of people, but it really is hilarious! Yes, let's all go to our nearest Kmart.......probably about 900 miles away for most people. My grandkids don't need to grow up with a Sears or Kmart.......there are plenty of run-down thrift stores in our own area that can give them an equally dismal experience if need be. LOL They'd no doubt ask to wait in the car if we ever did find a Kmart. HA! Buy all their merchandise? We'll put you in charge of that.........the leftover odds & ends still left in the stores would probably all fit in one car anyway. I'll stay home and flush my money down the toilet. LOL Thanks, that one really cracked me up after a hard day!!!!

No.
Both will soon be added to the long list of companies destroyed by greedy executives and corporate raiders.
