Thread regarding Boeing Co. layoffs

Is R&D moving to California?

The PD group in Everett (1500 people) doesn't have a permanently assigned work location for even 5% of their headcount. We are sharing a few desks in the Bomarc building but we are told to try to work remotely, and don't show up to the office more than maybe once a month. A rumor I heard is that BCA may be moving us out of WA, with new openings in SoCal and MO, but you would need to apply and they won't pay for relo. SPEEA and line management don't know anything/aren't helpful. Has anyone else heard any rumors about this?

Just my curiosity - Is the PD group consisted mostly 647 (Structures Design) and 63Y (Stress) Engineers and some electrical/payload engineers?

Yes I agree PD is probably less than 1500 post layoffs...maybe even less than 1000.
Bomarc is mostly the 777X program.

I cannot and do not believe the PD Group & R&D Group have 1500 employees in the Pacific Northwest. I cannot believe Harbor Point housed that many employees just before the pandemic. Is this accurate?

What teams are currently taking up space at Bomarc?

It would not surprise me if preliminary design in the future is moved to Moscow. They pay those employees the least so they’re going to be the cheapest.

When Boeing closed the composite development center in Renton it was obvious the company is not going to invest much in R&D or PD in the future.

The real reason they shelfed the future middle market aircraft, Is they have no money to fund it. That’s the same reason they shut down the composite development center. And decided not to fund Aerion supersonic development project. The CEO claimed they withdrew because they didn’t feel there was a market for it. The truth is they don’t have cash to cover daily operating expenses much less invest in a supersonic aircraft.

Maybe a few PD in Charleston, but the only thing Boeing cares about is increasing bonuses for the new executives. And reducing the union membership.

Another 737 down. Luckly both pilots survived. Engine failure.... again.

Harbor Point was a rental property and was sold by the owner last year. Boeing is no longer a tenant at that property, which jives with the situation in PD and the handful of temporary workstations in Bomarc. Also, the MCAS fiasco that almost sank the company started in PD Low-Speed Aero. So did the abortive NMA. If there is a totem pole, you can bet that PD is at the very bottom and won't be able to bump anyone. With the current GE legacy CEO/CFO and managers at all levels, you can bet that R&D is the lowest priority. It only makes sense if they decide to shutter PD and restart elsewhere, if at all. They are probably just figuring out the details.

Does Boeing still have PD? With the MAX fiasco and the 777x soon to be fiasco, it seems like the folks at Boeing forgot how to design good airplanes

I would think that the R&D / PD Group is at a higher level on the totem pole and will stay in the Puget Sound. I am assuming that a pecking order exists. I thought the R&D / PD Group were previously at Harbor Point……though I am not sure. I could see the PD Group bumping another organization/team and moving to the 40-87 or 40-88 buildings. Both these buildings are very nice buildings and fit the R&D / PD Group image / status. However, this would bump the current teams in the 40-87 or 40-88 buildings either into the factory or out of state.

The Bomarc situation and PD being up in the air is interesting, to say the least. If you look at the jobs online you will see that Boeing is hiring for great many engineering roles everywhere except the WA state - with the exception of a handful of specialized roles having to do with certification on programs. You may be up to something here. There is probably a move, reorg, or a big layoff in motion but it's not fully settled.

Whatever happens, please stay on the West Coast or leave the country, the rest of the country doesn't want anymore West Coast Wack-jobs from Washington, Oregon or California..all s-ho-e states. Move to downtown Portland or San Francisco

This could be a hint that SPEEA-represented engineers/techs would not do the new design work if Boeing decide to launch the new airplane program down in the road . Look at the amount of work statement in your group to see how you will be working in the future. Boeing already had design centers in many key areas around US (South Cali, Houston Texas, S. Carolina, Tustiville Florida) and other countries (Moscow Russia, Bangalore India). I heard that they reduced design packages to Seattle employee and bring to other locations .
