The bigger problem than layoffs and the number of people sent home is how decisions are made about who will be the target.
Instead of cutting slackers, lazy people, no, they cut those who work hard and do a great job.
How is that possible? Are they aware that they are harming themselves and the company?
Someone here said this, and I agree: laying off one lazy person could save two or more jobs for people who are doing their job seriously.

I've been at a few shops, in some the old heads are the lazy useless ones and in others the newbies are the lazy useless ones. There is no incentive to work hard when you all get paid the same, the foreman is going to look for their favs, and they are just going to furlough to save a little more money and hire more supervisors.
Haha, except once you're laid off, that's it. We still have many that are still furlough last year and bnsf extended 2 years for them to retain their senority date. If this another round of layoff happens again, it's gonna be one year to this guy's ans call backs are very low. I bet very few from last year will be called back but not this year layoffs. They will be drop off the list
The railroad does'nt care about your feelings, or how hard you work!!! Your work ethic wont save you from being laid off if you dont have higher seniority. And in some cases they'll close a shop and get rid of everyone. Why worry about what everyone else does at work. Show up, do your job and go home. Nobody makes you bust your a-s. FACT: You are part of a union, the unions go by seniority, if your towards the bottom of the roster you may get cut off, thats just the way it is. I dont agree with everything the unions do, but without them you'd be making $10.00 an hr with no benefits. Many before YOU have dealt with the same situation, and eventually got called back to work, so deal with it. Life's not fair, I don't know who told you it was?
A little to late for that.....
According to some of the email traffic I have seen, it appears the company has something like that in mind.
There is talk (in the emails) about cutting down on some of the people who management deems as “under-performers”. All this, in an effort, to avoid furloughs and mass cuts to the employees.
An example of ways that are being looked at to begin this process are the following:
- Watching the cameras more closely.
- Checking more closely for work that is “pencil whipped”.
- Checking for BF and LOTO violations more often.
I say don’t be a hero. Work slo make more dough. A good work ethic isn’t rewarded here on the Railroad. Work hard you’ll have to find a new yard.
At the shop I’m at, if they payed off the bottom 9 in my craft we would lose 1 good worker, if 15 were to go we would lose 2 good one.
