Any advice for those of us looking, even though we are deemed not good enough when we put our names in the hat in the main round.

Please dont feel disheartened. I'm sure the selection had things that were beyond your control such as gender targets, limited # of applications allowed, no interviews etc Focus externally as well. if you were not selected in the first round, it may also mean that you were not the most sought after and that no one tapped you on the shoulder to apply for specific roles. If so, there maybe trouble down the road if not now. Anyone who can get into Shell can get hired externally. Dont compare base salary of Shell to others. Focus on total compensation including the stock options many smaller companies provide. Overall they come out ahead in some industries. Grass is indeed greener in many places. Get your mindset right to migrate.
I’m on the same boat sadly. Keep your hope up at this point and do as much as you can. Just remember it’s not the end of the world even you don’t end up a position in Shell. The job market has been bouncing back up, so there are plenty of opportunities, at least for petroleum engineer.
Cut back on expenses now by eating out of large (50 lb.) bags of dry dog 🐶 food from Purina.
Apparently, thousands of roles where people took voluntary severance weren't posted in round one of Reshape, so this second batch will actually be quite large. Why that was the case? I don't know. I assume Shell leadership likes seeing their workforce squirm. Bonus points because leadership gets to tell everyone how much they care.
See if the company and Union will allow you to go back to hourly ranks. Something is better than nothing
