Macy's is not special in its cr---y treatment of employees. I've worked at several of our competitors and it's always the same. Managers with a superiority complex, leadership that solves all issues with cuts and store closures, customers who are belligerent and wrong but if you dare respond with anything but 'yes, ma'am' or 'yes sir' you get in trouble... At every company I was overworked and underpaid. So if you want a better place to work, leave retail. Otherwise, you'll just replace the frying pan with the fire.

Been in retail for 30 years; started career in south, many years in between in northeast and last ten in southern region. Never in any region/area or company I worked for required “yes ma’am” or “yes, sir.” Not a thing for thirty years. We’re blessed it’s not.
