To the folks who were let go - my condolences.
To the posters saying the market is hot - it's just not that easy. I get leads all the time for 'IT' but a good fit is rare. I mean it's equivalent to telling a healthcare worker that there are all kinds of leads in 'oncology, radiology, pedriatrics, or EMT.' Medicine is a huge field that's constantly changing.
In IT I've been a generalist and mainly I've worked support and administration. I tell folks I'm looking for a new IT job and most times I get leads on DB administration or developer.
He-l - look at the job posts. Typically hiring managers are looking for something so damned specific that no one's gonna qualify. They hired someone who was at their company for 10+ years and had such specific qualifications, that they are never gonna find someone with the exact same skillset. My advice to hiring managers is to find someone who is a tech wizard - having worked in IT for 20 years, I know them. It's a specific type and I don't know you can sort them thru a resume. But if you try to box them into a specific skillset, you're gonna pass on those applicants and it's a shame - because they'll intuitively learn your environment.
I'm a hard worker and I admit that there's no excuse for being behind the curve on technology (i.e. you can't find a gig because you haven't kept up.) But I will say, this isn't the 90's. Folks aren't going out and claiming they know technology and getting snatched up for a job immediately. For those folks who are cloud experts or whatever soup-du-jour skillset is in style right now, you better always study - 5 or 10 years and you'll be like everyone else. IT can be all consuming. Think before you judge.
