Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

How relevant is your skillset in competing companies?

Maybe someone has a different experience, but I couldn’t believe how much the technology I was working with was outdated until I got a job at a new company.
That's why I faced many problems right at the start of working in the new company, so my advice is to make sure you update your skillset as much as possible before applying for a new job.

I agree that you should never depend on your employer (or anyone else other than yourself) to keep your skills sharp. But the issue I have with Teradata, and more specifically my boss, is that any effort I make to integrate something new and current into my day job is blocked and I get reprimanded for even trying. I was told that if I want to work on something other than archaic Teradata technology then I need to do that on my own time. I have explained ad nauseam that I was trying to improve our processes and I was told to not rock the boat. And let's remember the fact that "my time" does not exist. I am on call 24/7 even though we do a rotating on–call list that is completely worthless. I'm still expected to watch email even when not on call and respond within an hour.

In the future Teradata or any employer is not responsible for keeping your skills current. If you had a manager that was worth anything they would have focused on your future, including education opportunities. I can’t tell you how many people had access and time to get cloud certified and they decided not to obtain it.

Never depend on your employer to keep you marketable.

Wow! I heard about this board from my coworkers. They said it was entertaining but I had no idea!

When I left last November and started interviewing, no one was interested in anything I did while at Teradata. They all seemed more interested in the training and even volunteer (side) work I was doing with current stuff. One place I interviewed with even said they didn't know Teradata was still around. Now I feel like I have a void in my resume where I might as well have been wandering in the desert for those 2 years.
