During all this time I’ve been at Citrix, I’ve realized that I can’t understand the logic in this company at all, starting with promotions. I couldn't believe when I heard who was being promoted.
I’m not envious, but it’s really weird how and why some people are promoted, because I know what their skills are. I still don’t get a promotion, no matter how much I expand my skillset. Could someone please enlighten me, how do you get a promotion here?

Want to get promoted ? Get another offer in hand that says someone else wants to pay you 20% more... and like magic they’ll promote you ! I’ve tested this. Got offered a 25% increase and was begged to stay. This is the same everywhere though. They won’t give you more money if you aren’t a risk to leave, or if you’re so irreplaceable that they won’t risk you leaving.
Companies don’t WANT to give you more money. They want to reduce costs. Therefore : Promotions aren’t a reward for good performance. They’re a method to prevent attrition of top employees.
Lots of it is just seniority based. They never promote the deserving newer folks because they don’t want to ruffle any feathers from those “next in line.” That’s why they lose all newer talent. You also get a 2% raise or so a year. Once you’re at the top of your bracket for your level they just say “wow congrats you’ve made the next one” purely on seniority.
It’s bad – I’ve actually seen worse in another company that’s near the top of lists for best places to work – but cronyism is rife. There’s a lot of people making their full time career sucking up to management at Citrix.
