Except, that is true. No need to buy off any politicians here.
Labor is expensive. If self-driving trucks take off Union Pacific has exactly two choices:
- Keep running trains with multiple people until the amount of business willing to pay extra dries up, then go bankrupt, or
- Switch to one-man/automated trains
In either case, the workers are getting the hit. Your anger at Union Pacific is misdirected, it isn't like management is keeping labor away from some magic money tree just to be mean. What is Union Pacific supposed to do? "You're right, we should use our license to print money to pay everyone $250k."
One man crews are coming on some runs soon. The railroads are also preparing for unmanned trains. They are already lobbying politicians for this when self driving truck technology takes off. They will say they cannot remain competitive without it and the bought off politicians will agree. The technology is already in development and is being used overseas in a limited manner. There are a lot of hurdles to this including road crossings, etc, but there are no problems that are insurmountable. It will cost a huge amount of money to pull off, but the railroads will recoup this by not paying crews. If you think this is impossible you better do some research into the technology.
We need a UP straight UP truth article to clear this right up. I’m sure it is just a misunderstanding.

It’s the article they put out a couple weeks ago in video form. I think the company wants a 1 man crew so there’s less victims in the derailments. “1 man crews save lives”- U.P.
