Before Reagan deregulated the railroad industry in the 80s. The interstate commerce commission was the governing body. And railroads were required by law to service any customer that wanted a switch. Large or small. This is what we need to go back to.We’re supposed to be building America. Not hedge fund bank accounts

The UP doesn't want growth. They want profits with no employees.

Yea right, they will strike about the same time North Platte does (which is never). Wishful thinking.

The railroads are allowed to turn down business, same for trucking companies and ships. The government cannot force a company to take on business it doesn’t want. I have seen this through the years with UP. In the early 2000’s UP could not keep up with the volume of intermodal traffic from California. There were trains holding in sidings from Texas to California and the company ran off quite a few smaller shippers during this time. Theses shippers were forced to turn to trucks to move their freight. We had a couple of smaller shippers on our service unit and the region VP told our managers not to service them. One of these businesses went out of business a couple of years later. It’s a shame when this happens, but it’s not uncommon.

This seems like something out of the Mo PAC play book. The seasoned employees where I work say this reminds them of what was going on before the merger in the 1980’s. I can’t believe the gov’t would allow a RR to turn down business because it hurts Commerce just like unions aren’t allowed to strike. So if RR hurt shippers it’s ok? I hope our lawmakers are paying attention to this.

At this point I no longer care what they do. Maybe the business isn’t profitable or they just want out of LA. There is such a shortage of truck drivers that those companies are going to have a difficult time taking on much more business. The shippers are the ones that are going to suffer if this post is true.
