Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Staying here just because you are reluctant to relocate?

Someone made a good observation that Intel benefits a lot from the fact that some people have their reasons for not being able to move to a new area.
I had long intended to leave but I am still here because my family is resistant to the move. I know some more folks here who stay at their dead-end jobs rather than face the idea of having to abandon their familiar surroundings and resettle somewhere else.

Almost everyone I know in Folsom live there because they have good schools and affordable housing.
All their careers are dead or have become so obsolete that they cant an employment elsewhere. They are biding their time and hope to have at least 1 job in the family till they reach 55 yrs.

I stayed in the dead end job due to family situation and fear of relocation. That was the biggest mistake of my career. Hated my job. Fortunately was ISPed but have been so happy ever since in the new job. I wish I had left 10 yrs earlier

COVID has dramatically changed this. Much much much easier to get a job remotely now than ever before. This will put pressure on companies like Intel that rely on people trapped in placed like Portland, not wanting to move...

This is particularly true for those who are already 50+, and of course it is much more difficult for this age group to find a job elsewhere.

Made sense. Some people with family cannot easily relocate to a different state. Could be the spouse has job or kids still in school. If just changing to a different local company or you can work for a company remotely, it is possible to change without relocating.
