Sales? Leases expiring? Upkeep too expensive so just easier to close? It seems like these last few stores remaining would be the best of the best in terms of sales performances, but just wondering if stores that performed better than others were k–led off first due to expiring leases? What is the strategic method for closing the final stores?

History tells us that maximizing operational losses for tax benefit even if it loses you $20B is Eddie's goal.
It is decided by the liquidator's ability to reach the store.
Eddie blindfolds himself and then throws a dart a a big map of the United States. Whichever store is closer to the dart gets closed. The only reason the Guam store stays open is its not on the map.
Generally if you are working at a store that can’t get stuff from vendors, the shelves are 2/3 empty, and your company shrank from over 4000 stores to less than 40 I’m pretty sure store will be closing. Just a hunch.
If the name begins with S or ends with Mart closing.
Blindfolded monkeys. Dartboard.
Is Sears Closing more stores?
I bet that mostly are competitor and demographic of their main customers in the vicinity and corporate tax write off. It could be a coin toss also. Leena has the answer but she ain't talking.
The OP is right about one thing, you would think only the best most profitable stores would be left, and clearly that's not the case. Maybe some remaining stores are profitable, but not all, and yes it boggles the mind how some stores have managed to survive the ax. But I guess if your store is still open, good for you!
Loss prevention input is heavily considered when deciding which stores to close. Various forms of shrink including internal and external shrink are weighed.
It can't be profitability. Why is Kmart in Hamilton, MT still open, or Sears in Union Gap, WA? Are those 2 examples of stores that are really raking in the big bucks for corporate?
A Store closure is really decided by a phone call typically on Thursday mornings after a round of Sears & Kmart stores are done liquidating and it depends on the message that comes from corporate to the store manager. Then the manager has to inform the entire store team on whether the location is closing or not that way the workers have opportunity to apply for a new job.
To determine if your store is closing, do the following steps. First, go outside and face the building. Second, look up at the sign. If it says Kmart or Sears, you know the store will be closing soon. Hope this helps.
What determines if if closes, it being still open is the main factor.
