- Would Kmart have succedded on its own? I often think Sears is responsible for the Kmart decline. Had Eddie just focused on Kmart, it would have turned around by now and we would be coming out with Wal-Mart closing lists instead. We would see new Kmarts opening in closed Wal-Mart locations and it would be Wal-Mart selling off assets like the George clothing line and Mainstays just to stay afloat. Kmart would also had opened standalone KCafes and competed with Subway and McDonalds. Sears was a big mistake to Kmart, it should have been left to die or get bought out by Sears Mexico.

If Eddie never bought Sears...many would be busy working for a still great place to work and don't have free time to commiserate here.
Maybe Sears & Kmart would have tried something different with competent leadership not letting Eddie combine them. Lacy will forever be known as the con that outconned the con that is Eddie to really screw sears and kmart over even worse.

Sears Essentials was doomed because of the ditz that ran Off Mall stores. She thought that painting the interior of the stores a certain shade of burnt orange would ensure their success. Lol!
If Kmart had opened more Kwash laundromats, the company would be thriving today. Such a missed opportunity!

If Eddie would have never bought KMart it probably would have been liquidated back then.
The biggest mistake was starting off changing Kmarts to Sears Essentials stores. People love Kmart. Forcing us to change to Sears drove people away and made them really dislike Sears. Eddie should have just bought the exclusive Sears brands like Craftsman and Whirlpool and just left Sears to rot.
He would have done the same stupid Ayn Rand approach with Kmart, with departments fighting for resources and not putting money into the stores. Still wouldn't have worked.
Sears and Kmart were the #2 and #3 retailers in America with $55B in sales when Eddie took over. They got passed by Target, Best Buy, Macy's, Dollar General, and hell, Petsmart, JCPenney, and the Montgomery Ward probably does more business these days. That's all on Eddie and his idiocy.
