Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

If your best friend had two job offers, and he had to choose between being a software engineer at Google or Union Pacific, what would u say?

Union Pacific?? I know we are attracting top talent these days, and I know this exact situation happens a lot. Thanks for the feedback.

Depends. What do you want to do? Build America? or build the Global Goolag? (Of course, these days, with BlackRock calling the shots, there really isn't much difference.)

I've only heard good things about working at Google for the most part. Any issues I've heard about pale in comparison to what goes on at UP.

As for why the tech CEOs make more than the railroad CEOs...the job of the Apple and the Google CEOs are to help the companies innovate and grow and attract the best employees to help them do so and keep their competitive advantage. The job of the UP ceo is more of a mafia boss than a traditonal ceo. He's a hatchet man.

@OP

Any tech company will almost certainly offer higher pay than UP, along with much better working conditions.

UP pays $10k-$15k below the market average of peer companies (F5+) for salaried, non-agreement employees. The only people for whom the pay is above average at UP are the non-college craft/agreement employees. Everyone else is getting less than what they’re worth*

*This includes the current UP CEO. Compare his compensation to any tech executive. He makes chump change by comparison.

If you do a quick search about se-ual harassment at Google, there's plenty there to read. You really don't have to look very hard to find out that Google does in fact have issues with morale.

I would like to hear more about the toxic culture at Google. How does it compare to Union Pacific's culture?

Interestingly enough no one has bothered to mention the toxic environment at Google.

Google. It's not even worth a discussion. Your opportunities would be exponentially higher.

Google has a future, I don’t know about the up. The company may survive in name but not the employees.

Interesting. Thank you for the feedback. I know it would be a tough decision for some.

It would depend entirely on the teams and the exact offers in question. If you say they're identical offers in everything other than company name, then I would definitely go with Google. It wouldn't take me a minute to come to this conclusion.
