Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

No Innovation or Vision - So Sad

A once great company is in decline. A long list of visionless CEOs and an apathetic BOD. Poor Engineering management. What has HA delivered? One database release in 3 years with no innovative features. Just NOS that is mediocre and catch-up. But hey, Top 100 Women in Tech! SM relying on McKinsey to figure it out is evidence he lacks vision or a plan. Cloud First in 2021, really??? A few years late.

Yes. The BOD should look into the obvious conflict of interest with the new strategy guy hiring his ex-firm, and then bringing McKinsey people on his team. This really smells…

McKinsey is in no hurry to deliver any new strategy as long as CSO is paying for the hours.

Anything new coming from McKinsey? I’ll be surprised if they recommend anything compelling with the “new” strategy.

One of the most glaring weaknesses had been the lack of go-to-market partners. On a scale of 1-10, TDC gets a1in this area. Look at Snowflake’s partner ecosystem, they get a 9.

So there is a new CEO, the head of Engineering has never managed a development group, an out of touch part-time CTO, a new strategy guy from McKinsey, and three CROs in four years. At least the CFO seems smart. Not sure I’d invest more in TDC.

The combination of MK followed by VL ki---d Teradata. At a time when they needed vision, those two CEOs really hurt. Both were nice guys but they knew nothing about technology. OR and SM were new CEOs. What was the Board thinking?

It’s embarrassing how little HA knows about the database. The brain drain is ki----g us. But SM likes her pretty roadmap slides. I’ve worked for some slick managers in the past, but she is the best at making herself look good I’ve seen. She deserves credit for that.

40 years with basically the same product in the same industry and you don’t have a clear strategy by now? That is hard to understand. It’s not like TDC is building new products, entering new markets, or making acquisitions. And you have McKinsey involved. Why?

McKinsey to the rescue. If you hire a McKinsey guy to lead Strategy, why do you need to bring them in and pay millions on top of what you are paying him. Plus he’s hiring SVPs??? Seriously? Can’t the guy just do his job? We will have to lay off a bunch more people to pay the consulting fees. What a scam.

@8rcz no, I actually never wonder why any of the big, important and relevant companies of the world are interested in buying us. Why would they want to buy the broken tricycle of technology when they already have supercars galore?

Ever wonder why all the leading tech players like Google, Microsoft, AWS, Oracle, IBM, or HPE are not interested in acquiring Teradata? They have boatloads of cash. Buying Teradata would be a rounding error on their balance sheet. ???

Newbie executives everywhere. I’m sure they are smart, but they can’t spell data warehousing. They don’t know what they don’t know, but are expected to lead somehow. We don’t have time for on the job training. Snowflake and Google are eating our lunch.

HA? Hahaha. She tells us to “sell what’s on the truck” but stuff keeps falling off the truck. Soon we will have to sell the truck! She knows nothing about Engineering just like RP before her. Go figure. #gameon

Why can’t Teradata attract an experienced CEO with industry experience. There is just a revolving door of CEO failures. And how could the BOD leave VL in so long? OR was a newbie CEO. So is SM. And pay them a ton while revenue is declining. Don’t they learn from their mistakes? As an outsider this baffles me.

DH is not a visionary. He is a leach sucking the life force out of every TDC employee. But all his kids got University educations without carrying any debt. Oh right TDC paid for that. What about yours?

I would not trust anyone on the ELT to talk to my customer except maybe DH. None of the rest have any credibility. Three CROs in four years? Constant reorganizations. Customers are all trying to get off Teradata. Now talk that the new strategy will save us. Remember OR had a strategy book-that really helped. This is all self-inflicted.

SM hires a strategy guy from McKinsey who does not know our industry or technology. This guy then brings in McKinsey, mostly junior guys who don’t know our industry. Then we hire more ex McKinsey SVPs? 20+ “strategic initiatives” going on that do nothing to fix our product issues. Time to update your resume. After this fails the next CEO will probably bring Bain back. We need a proven CEO like Slootman at Snowflake...

I agree Teradata is stuck in the past say 2001. Best days are far in the past.

Few!?!? When did the world start calling "10" few? Ignoring whatever they call it, to be something, you need to do more than just change the name. Picking up a standard kitchen cooking spatula and naming it "cloud-capable" does not make it so. For something like that to be cloud-capable, would need some serious reengineering. Our ancient database is just like that. Simply calling it "cloud-first" doesn't enable it to be used in the cloud.

But alas, my Director just tells us to work harder. Whatever... I take Fridays off and "work from my phone". ;)
