Thread regarding General Atomics layoffs

GA Electromagnetics Systems Division Layoff

I was just laid off this morning from GA-EMS. HR said the layoff number is 152 being let go. They/me remain GA employees through July 19 (60 days) and will continue to be paid. Not sure about any severance package (forgot to ask in the heat of the announcement).

They finally listed the GA-EMS layoffs at California EDD per the WARN act requirements. Go to https://edd.ca.gov/Jobs_and_Training/Layoff_Services_WARN.htm#ListingofWARNNotices and click on the link for notices since July 2020 and you'll see it in the downloaded spreadsheet under 5/20/2021. It shows 108 impacted, so the remaining numbers of 152 total must be in other states (Mississippi, Colorado, and Alabama)

I'm just glad to find a position with Sempra Energy. Bonus at the parent company, SDG&E and SoCal Gas is approximately 15-20% bonus (50% based company performance and 50% based on your performance).

My co-workers have been there for 10+ yrs and every year, they have received their bonus towards the high end. Wow - What an incentive to work harder and do everything in my power to help the company succeed? Every 2-3 yrs people come in with new vehicles and toys.

They continue to pay during that time to avoid having to issue the WARN Act notice prior to the layoff. It's standard MO for GA.

Actually state of California and the WARN act require an announcement be made if 50 or more or fired…. It would appear only a few people were let go that did not meet the threshold. So the post below has to be from a GA employee bc most GA employees talk out of their a-s like they know everything but no nothing

Sounds like propaganda from HR. State of California law says any RIF needs to be announced. the only announcement of RIF is from 2020

FAKE NEWS HR!!

awww, the person wants proof to ease his or her mind. layoffs is just a part of life when you work for someone else. There no faking being walked out by security bud. the number was small thought like under 100 and nothing major, just reevaluating my career aspiration all these stupid feelings racing through my head right now!

GA dominated in the 99 cent market of defense. GA is the dollar store of defense…. So of course they are going to keep the 99 cent talent… GA is getting back to its roots…. GA has never competed with the big boys … so GA needs to go back to its roots where it can survive…. 1 dollar, 1 dollar - everything 1 dollar!!! That’s 1 dollar talent as well

They fire the talent, keep the dead weight and wonder why they can't compete in areas they used to dominate. F*ck'em, not my problem anymore.

I think people need to go back to the office. Half the people I work with never did any work in the office… now I can’t even get these people to go to meetings…. GA’s motto is we allow you to sleep at your desk but we cannot allow you to sleep in your bed…. GA is not known as obtaining people with a great work ethic and great skills…

It's interesting to see other defense firms adapting to the "permanent remote work" as a new norm and employment option. Old leadership with old mentality. "Must be on site to be productive". GA needs to look at what's best to retain employees and add remote work as an option or a hybrid approach at a minimum. Folks are moving out of CA because the COL is too high and housing prices has gone through the roof where remote work for them would be a benefit to all.

Mr. Blue's you may want to reconsider your approach of employees returning back to the office 21 June. I know for myself and several others I work with that we have been very production even probably more productive working from the home not to mention the environmental impact of that many more cars on the road and unproductive commute time. How about quality of life?

So sorry to hear that. I used to work for GA-EMS and I think is a great Company to work for, but I do not think they can say the Company will never RIF anyone. I heard that from the employees only. Normally it is at will contract and I left the Company for a better opportunity. GA could also do the same, to better its business. Good luck out there finding a better opportunity!!!

So sorry to hear that. I was one of the 600+ laid off from GA-ASI last August. Make sure you save any personal files you have on the server or computer because they will cut you off quickly and won't give you access to retrieve those files.

"workload has not met its initial 2021 projections. As a result, GA-EMS is reducing the workforce to position the company to meet customer needs."
