Spin needed: overworked, undersized Bronco engines poor mpg

We need to find a positive spin for this.

The 2021 Bronco with the best gas mileage comes equipped with the entry-level 2.3-liter engine with either 10-speed automatic or manual in Base, Big Bend, or Outer Banks trim. It manages 20 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The most efficient Bronco with the available 2.7-liter V-6 sees mileage fall to 18 city, 20 highway, and 19 combined. The least efficient Bronco variant overall is any 2.7-liter equipped model with the Sasquatch package, which nets an even 17 mpg across the board.

The comparison to the Jeep Wrangler, with a plethora of engine options to choose from, isn't particularly kind to the Bronco. Using four-door, non-hybrid Wranglers as a comparison, to be as generous as possible to the Bronco, the Wrangler is ahead in every category until you get to the 392 V-8—no surprise there. Until now, no one has ever held the Wrangler in much esteem when it comes to fuel economy, what with its porky curb weight and atrocious aerodynamics.

When I am ready to do car payments again which I try to avoid I will likely get a Bronco. I find them more attractive than the Jeep Wrangler anyway.

I get so tired people whining about fuel economy. Don’t like it then go buy a sub compact. No one cares about + or - a few mpg.

Look at the 5.0L. PD redesigned it with VDE cylinder deactivation for 2021 and the engine is a total cluster fawk. Sorry to say my next new truck will have a push rod engine and not a Ford.

Yeah, the bigger Bronco will also have a eco function as part of it's GOAT mode.....so as another poster wrote, your mileage may vary but it is possible to get better mileage than what auto writers get in their testing. Most of the time they drive like they stole their test vehicles, anyway, which is not the way to get the best mileage out of any vehicle

Funny, but I am getting over 25 mpg on average in my Bronco Sport in mostly city type driving. In a drive from Michigan to Florida, I got over 28 mpg, and that was driving between 75 and 80 miles per hour. The vehicle has less than 2,000 miles on it, so I expect I'll hit near 30 mpg once the engine gets fully broken in

Don't take whatever these auto writers say as absolute truth. Fact is, the Bronco Sport comes with a Eco drive function, which changes the throttle/transmission mapping to get better fuel economy - and it works. Had the same feature in my 2018 F-150, and got nearly 25 mpg on the same drive from Michigan to Florida. I honestly don't think the auto writers know about this feature or care to use it because it "ki--s" some of the fun. All I know is that by using it, I routinely beat the city, highway, and combined fuel economy ratings on two different vehicles that have that feature.

We benchmarked Jeep but never intended to be better, just close.
