Schenectady’s Blue Heart is Dead - Can You Make a Sandwich?

The unionized work force of the Schenectady campus are mostly lazy, dr-g abusing, alcoholic incompetents who only succeed at building poor quality product and making excuses for an utter lack of pride in their craft. But really, what does GE expect? Their hourly work force is drawn from a pool of people who are barely able to attain a high school GED, suffer from mental health issues such as depression and PTSD, and have grown up in an economically depressed community where “good enough” was praised as great work. Most were raised in dysfunctional, broken homes with role models that taught them to have little respect for them selves and to take no pride in the fruits of their labor. These are men and women who are proud to be paid for an 8 hour shift while only actually working for 3 or maybe 4 hours. Men and women who have disdain for their employer, disdain for their managers and technical support staff, and ultimately disdain for themselves. These supposedly proud union brothers and sisters abuse any company benefit that is able to be abused, suck tens of thousands of dollars out of the business annually in frivolous, faked workers compensation cases, and worry more about their next work related lie, scam, or falsification than they worry about just doing their job to the best of their ability.
The first pass yield of every shop in Schenectady has steadily declined for decades. Quality and added value per hour has declined while unit build durations and rework costs have increased. Long story short, every union head costs the company more and produces less than the generation before. The manufacturing process has changed little in most areas and material lot quality ebbs and flows as it has historically. What has changed is the quality of the people who’s hands are doing the work day after day, year after year, and decade after decade. Not only are they less skilled, less intelligent, and less rugged than their predecessors, but they have much less to work for. When I say less to work for I mean that they go home to unstable family structures that they have recreated from their own damaged childhoods, drown their self loathing in copious amounts alcohol, choke the last stunted spark of their intellect with elicit dr-gs, and then come back to work the next day as a slightly dryer, slightly foggier husk than that which they were the day before. By less to work for, I mean that they have less to want to work for spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually. These are people who have been taught to have no faith in themselves, little respect for the people they hold most dear, and an ambivalence for any source of knowledge or authority.
How can you possibly expect anything more from a workforce that is being drawn out of one of NY States dirtiest blue collar gutters?
There is no fix for Schenectady because it’s union work force has basically lost its soul.
The business continues to shrink the work force and work load in 273. They are doing what they must in order to get the business profitable again and that will mean leveraging the 273 union “work force” less and less.
I’m sure the union folks that read this are the same folks that sit around their table at night and tell their families how darn hard they work, how hard they are driven by their operations staff, how they fixed a major technical process at work with an untested home grown solution, how the engineers and technical staff are just book smart mo--ns, and how they got up in someone’s face that questioned something they said or did.
Of course, those folks are obviously not part of the problem.🧐

  • FYI, I heard Jersey Mike’s is hiring sandwich technicians.
  • and of course, hourly layoffs are coming in 2021...and Schenectady's righteous union employees will of course be shocked and angry at being so very misused and so very taken for granted so very unjustly treated after working so very hard to produce something that they are so incredibly proud of.

Original poster made a few good points about sorry workers everywhere not just GE. At GE if workers were so lousy for so long then management was too lazy in doing their job as well through the written contract to correct and/or get rid of the lousy workers. All not just one group needs to take ownership not just the lousy hourly workers. Rejection is Protection for Redirection.

Just think, if these degenerates would have done an honest day's work, Culpable would have gotten over $100 million in compensation in 2020 instead of a measly $73 million. Let's get it together brothers and sisters!

I think the original poster made some good points about modern life at all levels of employment and society. Su----e rates for professionals is quite high. We have a societal problem. Not just a GE problem. Self indulgence and destructive attitudes and behaviors.

Talk about a self centered narcissistic individual who cannot think or treat other human beings outside his big ego personal head boundary. If GE is failing it’s because of personality types like this that makes a company fail. Blame yourself buddy and gain a little respect outside yourself for someone else!

While I disagree that the OP makes it appear that everyone is 273 is as stated above, I disagree that it is everyone. In fact the higher up you go, the less concentrated the levels become with coworkers like that. I do believe that the highest percentage of "mostly lazy, dr-g abusing, alcoholic incompetents who only succeed at building poor quality product" is at the very bottom. Those kind of workers produce the least, complain the most, and never attempt to make any achievements. I don't want to imagine what their personal at home life is like. I remember when GE wouldn't even look at you for fulltime employment unless you had an actual HS diploma... not a GED. The only people they would hire to mow the lawn were kids looking for seasonal work and they had to be college students on their summer break. Anybody remember those days? It's not like that now and those of us who have been witnessing the decline can clearly see the correlation. I'm one of the lucky ones who will suffer the least from the fallout....... are you?
